The last European midsize passenger van in the US was the Eurovan, which was a VW T4 Transporter. The Routan doesn't count (Go Home Routan, you're just a drunk Chrysler Minivan!). With the launch of the Mercedes Benz Vito/Metris; it looks like the good days of a camper van are back! This is now officially the cheapest MB badged vehicle for sale in North America, starting at just under $29k starting.
What are people's thoughts on this?

The last European passanger van in the US was the "Eurovan",
Well, unless one discounts passenger version Sprinters, which I can understand - but people still bought them. Minivans, your statement stands, because VW-badged Grand Caravans don't count.

We had a Eurovan when I was very little. My parents tell me it was shit.

I keep getting an Odyssey vibe from this.

Theirs was the T4 with the 2.5 and it was getting pretty beat up in just the few short years I remember riding in it.

If someone gave me the van I'd rock it but I wouldn't seek one out. I've got 2 kids and a dog and they all fit fine in my sedan.

I'd argue the full size Ford Transit is a European van as well, despite the Ford badge. Ford has been building Transits in Europe for half a century now.

Quite true. I believe small numbers of Transit Connects may have been made available for passenger use here as well, and that's the closest thing to a Euro-style minivan in ages.

I wasn't talking about the Connect though. The Connect is merely a more modern version of the Ford Escort van.

Does the new Ford Transit Connect Wagon count?

I was thinking more along the lines of midsize passenger, not commercial large passenger vans.

And the Mopar vans are built in Ontario...

I'd be more inclined to go for either the SWB or LWB Ford Transit Tourneo Custom.
Though more likely a Ford Transit Custom Sport.
Nice.

We only got the full size Transit van last year in the US, because something something V8 Econoline is superior sez JimBob something something.
Although we have had the Transit Connect for some time (from 2009 onwards, I think)

We've had the Transit Connect since 2009 in the US...

I see the Transit as the quintessential European van.

That might be more of an UK thing. I see plenty of Transits, don't get me wrong, but I believe the VW Transporter is more common where I live.

It may well be. Here, I think it goes Transit, then Sprinter, then Transporter. I've spent the most time in the Transporter, though, as my stepdad's had a T5 for some years now.
It isn't used as often these days, but the word 'Transit' was used as a generic term for 'van' for decades.

When I saw the front of the van I was expecting the sides to have an airbrushed dragon/wizard motif. I'm disappointed.
