So my wife takes her car to the dealership for a service and I get a call from her... They want to charge $1600 for tires and battery replacement (there is also warranty fixes that need to be done). They tell my wife that they need to reset the computer after the battery replacement otherwise it will overdraw because it doesn't know that there is a new battery. What dumb fuck programmer thought that was a good fucking idea? You see, this is why developers are the bane of my god damn existence and why I want to drive a truck from the 60's everyday. FUCK THIS SHIT.
If we were to add on everything that is getting fixed under warranty the price would have probably been around $3k...
CONGRATULATIONS 2009 BMW, YOU'RE LESS RELIABLE DEPENDABLE THAN A 2004 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY AND A 2004 JAGUAR X-TYPE! That's right, both my cars have cost less to maintain and had less go wrong on them... FUCK!
You're bad and should feel bad.
I told my wife to get the battery replaced and warranty stuff done, they can go fuck themselves if they think I'm going to pay $230 a god damn tire just so my wife doesn't have to worry about changing flats. It's time she learned...
Also I apologize to Bimmer fans, E30's are some of my favourite cars. This rant is directed at this particular piece of shit. This also means that I will be buying a indy mechanic level diagnostic scanner, seeing as my wife is the one who is going to always be driving a newer car.
Rant over.

$1600 for tires and a battery? You're being taken advantage off. I don't see how this makes the car unreliable though, tires and even the battery are normal wear items.

I mean, in all reality BMW does stand for Bring My Wallet doesn't it?

It's the busted rear defroster and the leaking water pump. The car only has 73k miles on it, plus all the previous things that had to be fixed under warranty over the last two years. Let me tell you, I'm dumping this piece of shit as soon as the warranty expires.

Perhaps reliability is the wrong word, rather dependability on a cost basis. He's looking at the whole picture including what the warranty work would have been, and the total expense of normal wear items + repairs needed. If the normal wear item cost is so high that it obliterates the cost advantage over a less reliable vehicle's repairs, there's less of a point in having the "better" one, particularly if hurdles are present to prevent somebody taking care of normal wear items themselves. Like, in this instance, the reprogramming.

Nailed Ramblin, I'm noticing a trend of car manufactures moving towards a model that is making it has hard and cost prohibitive as possible for weekend guys like us to take care basic wear item replacement which is fueling my rage towards this car.

I'm gonna go build my own car! With blackjack... and hookers!

This is why you lease a modern BMW. Turn it in every 3 yrs for a new one.
Generally nothing *major* breaks before 50k miles, and it's covered under warranty if it does.
I'm guessing your car is a CPO?

On second thought, screw the car and screw the black jack!

Correct, thankfully my wife was smart enough to purchase a CPO. Let me tell you, those carmax warranties are looking REAL good a the moment.

Yeah, that computer reprogramming thing is such a crock of shit. Assuming that it actually requires reprogramming for a new battery (debatable), that's just a horrible design. So many ways that could have been avoided.
What car does your wife drive?

My new battery came in at $318 because I had to pay them to reset it.

Yup. You are experiencing firsthand the reason why "luxury" cars depreciate so badly.

Resetting the computer when the battery is changed shouldn't be an issue, ever. Especially when you are driving a premium car. It's a damn glitch that the dealership is exploiting.

Yup, the thing is I too own two luxury vehicles but have been lucky because I can do all the work myself (and have access to facilities for the Land Rover when my garage proves inadequate) so I never truly bore the cost of having someone else do it.
What this really showed me is that I'm going to have to make the investment in upgrading my garage so that I can take care of most common issues myself. That or convince my wife she wants to drive an E30 or W123 for the rest of her life lol.

the battery only needs to be programmed if you're going to a different type of battery, for example, lead acid to agm, because of the rates at which they charge, like to like needs no program, also tell them to keep the tires and go to tire rack. Service advisors job is to sell work, regardless of the dealership.

Having the battery done as it's shot and I'm at work so can't do it myself (take a train everyday so getting home isn't the quickest thing in the world), getting the tires from elsewhere.

look into the BMWhat App and their wifi/ blutetooth dongles. They scan for all BMW codes and they also just added the option to register your brand new battery with the car versus having the dealer do it.

Such is the price of bigger rim sizes.. The higher they go, the higher the tire prices and the less rubber the tire uses... Kind of odd.
