On another note, on my FP claim that German reliability is something of a myth, nearly every one of the dozens of rebuttals I've gotten have been from BMW owners. Almost no Audi, VW, Mercedes, or Porsche. So either BMWs are actually way more reliable than any other German car, or...

Oh fun, an Isuzu Impulsive.

Kinja'd!!!1

That's Impulse.

Impulsive is someone who sees a car with an engine they want for a swap and then just takes it.

Bwaha, I meant it how it's basically a Geo Storm that Isuzu decided they liked a litttle too much.

And don't make me take that engine back again!

Isuzu built the thing. GM rebranded it as the Geo Storm.

idk man, my bmw has not left me stranded/depressed about my aching wallet and I'll be crossing 75k sometime in the next few weeks.

Also, the key to having a reliable bmw is avoiding forced induction and staying with 6 cylinders. If you must have turbos get an N55 equipped car. And believe it or not, the naturally aspirated M cars are pretty reliable.

My 944 hasn't failed me at all, and I didn't see the post or claim so...

My car hasn't either. I actually originally made the comment as a joke of some sort, but nevertheless.

Right, but I only had one single person step up and mention the legendarily bulletproof old Benzes, or the apparently not so bad current VAG lineup. It just struck me as odd that nobody defended the others. Like I said, can BMW really be that much more reliable than all the others?

You can't joke on the FP. Especially not about flat billed hats.

I really want to like the current VAG line up, but I keep hearing bad things about their reliability, which is a damn shame because otherwise I would recommend the Jetta GLI to people. It's a good car.

I think Mercedes isn't quiet 100% there yet. Apparently they've gotten better, but talking to some non enthusiast friends that drive a '10 E550 and an '09 C300 there've apparently had some trouble.

Lol reliable BMW. All of these cars can be reliable, it's just that as you add complexity reliability drops. Lots of modern Mercedes are supremely reliable, but of course you only hear about the ones that aren't. I'm sure the same goes for other German makes as well. My two Mercedes (210's) are just shy of 200k each, one has had little more than oil changes its whole life and the other had only had minor repairs that have to do with age and mileage. I've got friends who have BMW's with high mileage and minimal problems too. Although I don't know anyone personally with a VAG product that has been any good.

Oh definitely. I would probably avoid the N52 though. Just because I've seen a few "cracked" blocks where the magnesium was separating from the aluminum and allowed coolant and oil to go where they shouldn't.

I'm willing to bet that at least 75 percent of people that say German cars aren't reliable have never owned one, at least not a nice one.

People are like "well I talked to this other jackass who also doesn't know anything about cars and he said Audis are crap, so I bought a Kia."

My friends say stuff like that all of the time, when I try and chat someone into a 3 series. When they are finished talking I can't help my self from saying " thank you (name here), owner of 0 BMW's"

Geo was a collection of rebadged Suzukis, Isuzus and Toyotas.

GM had an ownership stake in Isuzu. The Isuzu Trooper was sold in various markets as the Chevrolet Trooper, Holden Jackaroo, and Opel/Vauxhall/Holden Monterey. That's also how Isuzu ended up selling rebadges of Chevy pickups and a version of the Trailblazer.
