25k though, and would like it to be able to tow at least a bit

VW Golf TDi Wagon or jetta sportwagen TDi, how ever they market them
![]() 03/03/2015 at 21:04 |

Not all that big on E60s tbh and 168k scares me off. I've owned high mileage BMWs before, not going back haha
![]() 03/03/2015 at 21:05 |

well, you can buy an E63 for the price of cow poop :P
and being able to tow, your probably gonna have to get an SUV or a Truck.

Are wagons an absolute requirement or are imposters allowed like the GLA or the X1 or CX5?

Bwhaha, I'd be the same about that one.

How about this one?

Not trying to tow a ton, most wagons can tow what I need them to, and also an E63 manual wagon is a unicorn where I'm from haha

Am actually looking at Jetta Sportwagen TDIs. Those are already on my list.

They're good cars. Expect timing belt, water pump and other general service items at 100k.

The Volvo V50 sounds like a great choice. 2005-2011. Probably your most likely choice.
Get the VW Jetta/Golf wagon ONLY if you have an extended warranty like Carmax offers.
There's also the Mercedes W203 wagons.
Of course the obvious Subaru wagons, Saab 9-2X, and Saab also has the 9-5 wagon and 9-3 wagons.
The good news is that you're in Long Island, close enough to NYC so the market is big enough anyway.
This 2008 Saab 9-3 sportcombi wagon in Brooklyn should work for you.
![]() 03/03/2015 at 21:11 |

hmm.... But a bit bigger would be nice. Almost no space in the back of the modern WRXs.
![]() 03/03/2015 at 21:12 |

Saab, Volvo, Audi, Mercedes, BMW, Subaru and the CTS.
All you have to do is pick model, year, and drivetrain.

Funny thing is... You listed almost every car on my list. I can't find Volvo V50s. I've been searching up down left and right. If I could find a low mileage 6 speed Volvo V50 (or a Saab 9-3/9-5 Combi with low miles) they'd have my money locked up right there. Unfortunately... I can't find one for shit. That's part of the reason I'm reaching out for help haha.
On another note: http://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/ This is what dreams are made of.

Oh, Nice.
I've always been a sucker for the B5/B5.5 Passat.
I've currently got a B5 A4, but also need a wagon. That being an Avant.

That 9-5 you linked to is an awesome color!

I completely agree but have struggled with a wife who loves suvs. I've convinced her to fall in love with the Juke meanwhile I've fallen for the GLA, especially in brown.

Actually I drive to that exact town at least once a month because I have family there. If I'm still looking for a car next time I'm out there, I'm fucking there haha and I am in love with that color.

i will strongly disagree with this
what do you carry? Get the hatch
I've gone awayf for a long weekend with 4 people and carried 4 peoples worth of crap.
I've gone camping with a buddy and had all our crap, hiking gear, tent and a grill
2 mountain bikes
8' pieces of trim
2 toddlers and a double wide jogger/stroller
obvious this wasn;t all at the same time but If I can work it you probably can

![]() 03/03/2015 at 21:31 |

Yeah, I saw it after I posted and for the same reason you probably won't like the Nismo Juke I just posted. Have you considered a forester? I never thought I'd like one but I fell in love with an 04 Forester XT I test drove once. As far as the new ones go I'd rather have a base model with a stick than a turbo and a cvt.
![]() 03/03/2015 at 21:32 |

I currently have a tree in the trunk of my Passat wagon. I need something that can at least fit a set of tires, car parts, and 5 people. WRX can't do that unfortunately.
![]() 03/03/2015 at 21:32 |

It seems like you're heading for a sportwagen or an older car.
![]() 03/03/2015 at 21:34 |

Probably. I'm trying to figure out if there are any cars I'm forgetting at this point.

Foresters are on my list though.

Yeah, I'm almost considering replacing my B5 Passat with a B5 Avant haha
![]() 03/03/2015 at 21:37 |
|
Haha, if you can find one in good condition. I've been searching for ages for an Avant with under 100k with the 30v 2.8. I've had many dreams about throwing a PES G2 into one.
![]() 03/03/2015 at 21:38 |
|
Haha that would be awesome! I really like the 1.8t personally, so I'm more than willing to stick with that. Just have to be weary about the timing belts.
![]() 03/03/2015 at 21:40 |
|
nice cars, we like ours...but...the hpfp crapped the bed at 40000 miles and would have cost 10000 to replace if it wasnt under warrantee.
![]() 03/03/2015 at 21:41 |
|
I've got the 12v 2.8 in my A4 and it's turning out to be pretty reliable (Knock on wood) but I'd like a 1.8T also. The only problem would be finding one that isn't beat to death, and that usually means that the drivers seat is not torn :)
Like this, but a wagon.

E91 BMW 328i manual. Inline 6 reliable RWD (or AWD if you want) wagon with hydraulic steering. Doesn't get better.

yea, i put a trailer hitch on mine for the bikes cuz I didn;t like carrying them inside (i had the car for 4 months I wanted to keep it looking pretty) It could fit 5 people and parts, put the wheels in a small trailer. Ever thought of a Flex? the ecoboost is damn fast, its pretty cool with the 2nd row captains chairs but I think to fit all that youd have to go with the regular bench.

Hard to find one low mileage, and I'm trying to stay as far away from expensive repairs as I can (I know it's not going to happen in the end but still)
![]() 03/03/2015 at 21:57 |

If you're willing to pay around $25-30k, you can get one with about 20k on it. I'm at 75k on my 328i and it's solid *violently knocks on wood*

so WRX with a trailer haha , i wont give up

See my post above (or below)... and if you want to tow, then you're looking mainly at the Subaru Outback Wagon or the Forrester. Those are usually good for towing about 2400 pounds.
And the Saab 9-5 I think is rated to tow 3000 pounds.

Who put the tree in your trunk?
Don't you know you're not supposed to put a tree in your trunk!

I've seen every link you sent except the XB and HHRs XD I didn't bother opening those. I love that V50 but I just can't justify 140k.

![]() 03/04/2015 at 09:15 |

Trunk space is actually smaller than the current gen or last gen Impreza. So maybe not.
Renegade - 18.5 cu.ft.
Impreza (now) - 22.5 cu.ft.
Impreza (last gen) - 19.0 cu.ft.

New twist...they call it a wagon, with sliding doors. Some may not consider it cool though.

You may want to reconsider the HHR because you might be able to find an HHR SS (with the 2L DI turbo with 260HP) in your price range. And I think they look pretty good in SS trim:
Also... consider the PT Cruiser... a manual turbo one (GT model). They're dirt cheap so you won't have to feel bad if you damage it while hauling stuff around. Most of the people who say PTs suck are people who drove ones that were automatic or they only don't like the look. The automatic does suck in these. The manual ones are much better from a performance and fuel economy perspective. And the turbo models get a manual made by Getrag.
And I owned a base 2006 PT for a couple of years. Once you take the back seats out (which takes less than a minute), you'd be surprised how much you can fit AND how much weight the thing can handle and still feel stable. Just change that timing belt when the owner's manual says to and keep the cooling system in tip top shape to avoid overheating and blowing the head gasket. At the 6-8 year mark, it's common to have to replace the radiator, radiator fan, thermostat housing and some hoses. Many people don't do that, let their PTs overheat, which prematurely kills the engine.
I used my PT for camping trips, Ikea furniture buying trips and other hauling... along with daily driving sometimes with the kids.
And if you like the V50, you can get the same basic chassis and same basic body style, but with less power, in the form of the Ford Focus Wagon. I have a 2007 Focus wagon. They're cheap and have pretty good handling. Slow compared other vehicles being discussed here. The 2005-2007 models have the benefit of a Mazda-based engine with a timing chain (the older Zetec models had timing belts and made a bit less power), but have interior/exterior styling that is more bland than the 2000-2004 models. The 'perfect' Focus Wagon (in my opinion) is the 2003 or 2004 model with the optional 2.3L Mazda-based engine. You get more power (145hp vs 130-136hp for the 2L), a timing chain and the nicer style of the earlier models. Only downside is it's a PZEV rated... which means it has one of those 'lifetime' engine air intake filters.

Volvo V70/XC70/V70R.
Or, save yourself $15K and buy my 1990 Volvo 760 turbo wagon DD. It is automatic, but robust, turbocharged, a good size, surprisingly good handling, and ready for some love and a new caretaker. I'd let it go for around $3-4K with all the extra parts I have for it, and the rest could be spent on shipping from Saint Louis to you, and any repairs and maintenance.
