Have we ever done a poll about that? I know we've got people from The US, Canada, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Finland, The Philippines, Netherland, The UK, France, Brazil(?) and such..
Where you all from guys?

Yeah, but that does not really work though, I remember it placed me far out in the Arctic Ocean.

When was this made? It's before my time but I've seen it shared on quite a few occasions such as this one and I have no idea how up to date it is.

How to I add myself yo this?
![]() 03/03/2015 at 14:30 |

So 'Murican then :) But seriously, what's the deal with Americans always telling people they are so and so this and so and so that? The way I see it you're German if you're born there, and if your parents are born there you're "pure" German".

I found it here

You think we have that many dutch users on oppo...oh, for you.
![]() 03/03/2015 at 14:36 |

That's actually what I'm wondering about, how many languages do we have her on Oppo.
![]() 03/03/2015 at 14:37 |

I think we all answer that way because "American" isn't a race, it's just where we all ended up.
Melting pot, yo.
I misunderstood your question, BTW. I thought you were doing a diversity poll, not geographical.

Klootzak is from my mom's grandfather.

Cause we're all a bunch of mutts haha. It's like talking about dogs...if it's a mix people are always like "She's a lab-golden mix" or whatever.
Seriously though, home life can be very different if you're in the first couple generations or come from one stock. I'm 4th generation German both sides (except one great-grandmother who was American Indian) and it was serious culture shock to go visit folks who were here since the Mayflower or Jewish or Korean or whatever when I was a child.

My paternal family has been in 'Murica since the 1600s.
We know which boat they first came on, and it's title has been a recurring first/middle name in throughout the generations.

Pure geographical (actually language as well).
Anyway, American is not a race that's true, but neither is Norwegian or Australian :)

I think my dad's mother's side of the family was North German or Dutch or something.
It's so small that I always makes dates pay for me.

That's a nice combo though. Do you speak both spanish and italian as well?
![]() 03/03/2015 at 14:53 |

Palestinian, born in USA, dad was born in USA but spent a good chunk of his life in Palestine, where my mom was born.
![]() 03/03/2015 at 14:53 |

That's rather awesome.
![]() 03/03/2015 at 14:55 |

That's cool, never met anyone from Palestine on the interwebs before. And YES, I DO recognise Palestine (whether you like it or not :P )
![]() 03/03/2015 at 14:59 |

I speak Spanish, I understand most Italian but can't really speak it. In High School I had the option to take either and because I was lazy I picked Spanish for the easy grade, in hindsight I should've went with Italian but fuck it.
![]() 03/03/2015 at 15:00 |

Nah, Spanish was the smart choice there mate. Italian is a bunch of languages stuffed together as one, Spanish is pretty much universal.
![]() 03/03/2015 at 15:02 |

Thanks!
![]() 03/03/2015 at 15:04 |

Yeah it's always interesting when I meet another Palestinian, and yes, I still do recognize us!
![]() 03/03/2015 at 15:05 |

Just saw that my post could be taken as an insult towards Italian, it was not.. but Italy did not have a lingua franca until the nineteenth century.
![]() 03/03/2015 at 15:07 |
|
I'm not from Palestine though, I just think that Norway (where I'm from) should say that "Yes, Palestine is a country, and we respect that"
![]() 03/03/2015 at 15:23 |

Born in New York, USA. Spiritually a Minnesotan and of Norwegian descent with some German mixed in there too. I guess I should count my slight Italian bits but whatever...
![]() 03/03/2015 at 15:25 |
|
Lol I'd hope that your previous post wouldn't be taken as an insult because I surely wasn't insulted. English as universal as it is, is a bunch of languages stuffed into one too!
![]() 03/03/2015 at 15:28 |
|
No doubt about that mate, English is.. well.. yeah :P My point was that Spanish is "better" than Italian :P You've got Mexico and all that, and Portuguese is close enough that you'll get the gist.
![]() 03/03/2015 at 15:32 |
|
Yep when I use to work retail, Brazilian tourists would come in speaking Portuguese to me and I could pretty much make out much of what they needed.
![]() 03/03/2015 at 15:36 |
|
The way I see it, Portuguese and Spanish is almost like Norwegian, Swedish and Danish. Probably more like German and Dutch though :P
![]() 03/03/2015 at 15:40 |

Canadian
![]() 03/03/2015 at 15:43 |
|
Canadians tend to do the same. Ask a Canadian where they're from and you'll get a family tree and a list of reasons why they're German/Irish/Italian/Polish/whatever.
![]() 03/03/2015 at 15:47 |
|
I know.. but WHY? :P THAT'S what I'd like to know :) I mean I'm born and raised in Norway, I can speak Norwegian, Swedish, Danish (northern), and English. I can read all of them thingamabobs plus German, Dutch, Flemish (partially) and some Polish, Spanish and Italian.

I'm from the United States, so English is my primary language. Jag talar också lite svenska... dåligt.
![]() 03/03/2015 at 15:51 |

Tja.. Jag har nog sett andra tala svenska rätt mycket värre..
That's actually very good indeed.

I think McMike's reply covers it well - Canada and the USA are young countries and as a people, we're not a homogeneous mixture. Growing up I learned a lot about the history of my family because it was still fresh in the minds of my elders, which gives it importance. I think this makes us identify with a romantic notion of our ancestry, which is why we tell people we're Irish or German, not Canadian.
My kids will likely learn little or none of this, because it's less important and more distant in our collective history. They will identify themselves as Canadian, or more likely as French-Canadian ("Québecois").
![]() 03/03/2015 at 16:03 |
|
I understand, sort of.. But what you Should do is teach your children the language of your people :) But hey, French Canadians, they'll learn both french and english then.

Yes, but which bits are Italian?
![]() 03/03/2015 at 17:13 |
|
I didn't actually realize I wrote bits... I don't know actually to be honest. I've got blue eyes and lightish colored hair so I didn't get much of the Italian.

I'm a Minnesotan, but I was born in Germany (my avatar pic is the flag of my home town).
