Terrible news actually. My paternal grandmother has been ill for some time, and tonight was the night my family decided to take her off life support. I'm glad I could take time to be there, and keeping up with the posts here lent some aspect of normalcy to an otherwise insane night. Just thought you guys should know how much a tight knit community like this one can help, even if you don't realize.

My late grandma's wheels.

This is one of those decisions that I hope not to face, but if it's for the better...

I really hope she's resting easy now and I'm here if you want to talk.

We had to do the same for my father in law. When it's our time to go home, it's time to go home. I do know how stressful keeping a death vigil is, so please take some time for your own needs.

It was so much harder seeing my Grandfather turning into a shell, than actually losing him. It's a strange relief to have, but it's there, when you know they are at peace.

I feel the same way, my grandfather died a few years back. He had pretty advanced Parkinson's, so I know the feeling.

It's best if you don't see the last moments of a persons life if they are already considered brain dead. Had a friend who passed that way at 22 from a TBI, and his wife who also my friend, really should not have been there. He had died on the soccer field, but was able to save the lives of others....

As for my father in law, we think the Hospital should have thrown in the towel sooner, since we knew he wasn't going to get better, and as he got worse, he lost his mind. So it was really hard on my wife, and she remembers it on that time of year.

Just take care of yourself.

So sorry for your loss. We had to take my grandfather off life support when he was 80. It sounds terrible, but sometimes it's just easier for them and everyone to let them go.

Your grandma has a Mazda 5 which is pretty Jalop in my book. Take it easy and have a rally prepped 944.

I'm sure your presence was helpful, and that your family will need your support over the next few weeks.

My mom was hard hit when her mother died, but when her father died it was extremely painful. We knew her mom would die, and my grandparents even had an agreement, that no one would attempt to save her. So when she had a heart attack, my grandfather waited ten minutes before calling the ambulance, as agreed, and he was a physician.

But when my grandfather knew he was beginning to lose his mind, he checked out, which hit my mom very hard, despite knowing this was coming, and that she would have done the same. This took her time to come to terms with, even though she is not willing to live in a nursing home or on life support.

Since we don't many realities, I found that she needed a great deal of support. While every family is different, many of our very human needs are the same. So they will need your support and your time listening..........

Take care.

And being supportive is all you can do, besides taking care of yourself.

As for my losses, it's not hard on me because I took the time to get to know my grandfather, despite how difficult it was due to his hearing loss during WWII. And we all knew my grandmother needed to die, as she was one of the first women to survive breast cancer, which bought her more time, but the treatment of which was extremely damaging to her health. So I really don't view it as a loss, as I knew them, and had honest decent relationships with them. In a way, they are still with me, even though I can no longer see them.

Back to you, you will need to deal with stress, help out with arrangements, and take care of your classes. I had to retake a semester of Calculus since my final was on the same day as my grandmothers funeral, and my jerk professor said "do you know how many grandmothers die a semester" and gave me an zero on it.

Seriously, take care of yourself, as your family will probably need a lot from you for some time.
