1. What converted you into a Jalop?

2. What were your previous "-lops?"

————————

1. Saints Row III. Yeah.

2. 1999-2003 = Goo goo ga ga-lop

2003-2004 = Semi-Jalop!

2004-2006 = Astrono-lop

2006-2008 = Anato-lop, Geo-lop

2008-2009 = Boat-lop

2009-2010 = Plane-lop, World War II-lop

2010-2011 = Halop

2011-2012 = Mortal Kombat-lop

2012-present = Jalop. Starting around June 2012, this is my longest lasting interest so far; I think it will stay. It takes the lead on WW2-lop by about 9 months.

Edit: I am also a drum-lop right now, which started in the same month as Jalop

I was always a Jalop. I just didn't realize until 2 months ago. I never knew such a place existed until 4 months ago. I suppose what "made me into a Jalop" was tearing around mountain roads surrounding Blacksburg with my dad driving our family's (short-lived) BMW 2002. That's a memory from a young age, the nonvocal-memory age I think.

1. My dad worked in automotive, so I was always exposed to cars in that way, although we never had anything fun or exciting. I didn't truly become a jalop until I started driving though. At that point my desire to know more about cars and drive became insatiable, and once I learned about the awesome cars I never got to experience in person I came to be greatly appreciative of great (and not so great) engineering.

2. I have been a man of many -lops, and still am. This includes, but is not limited to: musiclop, instrumentlop, boatlop, vapelop, sailop, operalop, computerlop, econolop, spreadsheetlop, yogalop, booklop, vodkatoniclop, candlelop, cigarlop, NPRlop, and hopefully motolop in the summer!

Top Gear was my gateway drug. Started with youtube clips of the show, then full episodes, then every episode in order, and then I needed more detail so I ended up on forums and so on, and eventually here.

As a child: Train/car/plane/space/dinosaurlop

Middle school: Music/planelop

High school: planelop (I went to Aviation High School) transitioning into jalop, because it turns out the FAA is a total kill joy. I'd still like to get a license and a Super Cub to go bush flying though.

Spring break of senior year I went full Jalop without even knowing it—I hadn't found Jalopnik/oppo yet so I didn't know I was living the dream—I bought a 500 dollar slightly not running brown rear wheel drive manual wagon with fender mirrors and a carburetor. Yeah. That happened.

Haven't looked back since.

1. It's complicated. My grandfather has always worked in the automotive parts industry and I went through a phase when I was a kid where I got everything Corvette I could get my hands on. I played Cruisi' USA, Project Gotham Racing, etc. It waned for awhile starting in high school but became a big deal to me again when I played GTA5. For some reason all the driving of fake sports cars drew me back to the real stuff.

2. I've gone through different phases of being really into WWII, fighter planes (all eras), and just guns in general (especially AR-15s). After getting in a serious relationship and getting married it got hard to diversify my interests so it's been easiest just to just focus in on cars and racing.

I guess playing Project Gotham Racing 3 was the first time I started think about cars more than go-fast and getting from A to B. I've always been into vehicles from the Millennium Falcon to the Fiat Punto, only recently the Jalop life found me. Partly because of /Drive.

Aviation High School in NY? Or is that just a general name?

It's the Seattle area one, it's a part of a public school system but you have to apply, they only let in maybe 115 kids a year. It's tied in with a bunch of aviation industry people and companies, and they just moved to a new building that's literally attached to the museum of flight. Pretty damn cool.

Us and the NY one may or may not be vying for domain names haha.

When I was a kid my dad had a subscription to Automobile Magazine. It was one of the first things I learned to read. I had an issue with a Ferrari 328 GTB on the cover that I read front to back over and over and over again. Before I got to kindergarten, I could tell you the 0-60 times of all the cars listed in the back of the magazine.

He also had an '85 Toyota Supra, and when he came home from work I'd often make him pop the hood in the garage and ask him to point out the different things under the hood, always in the format of "where's the (part) of it?"

"Where's the spark plugs of it?"

"Where's the fuel injectors of it?"

Etc.
