I liked my cafe racer first bike.

You should write a counterpoint to Peter Black's post and sway me to back to your side!

Nah. For the most part, he's correct. I wouldn't say that it's correct for everyone, though. I'm not too worried about the brakes/chassis issues mentioned because I've never been interested in pushing on a bike at all. I don't ride fast. I like putting around in my little old 70s bike. For me, when I got onto a CB350, it felt and drove exactly as I always pictured a motorcycle to. I'm also somewhat mechanically inclined, so don't mind wrenching on it myself or having it down for a while while waiting for parts. I totally agree with him on the lights, though. Most cafe style bikes have these dim little brake lights that just aren't sufficient, and I'd rather not get run over by grandma.

Good stuff! I am also going for my endorsement this spring. Had my permit in 2006 but never completed the process.

I could also as well drive out to the TDot and get some motorcycle classes from you too.

To be honest it sounds like we're in pretty similar situations. I just want a bike to tool around my tiny hometown on while I'm back for the summer. Highest speed limit is 55 and I'll just be cruising around the lakes and back roads after dinner time and stuff.

I'll probably end up with something 250-350cc from the 80s given my budget. I know something newer would be safer, but if/when I want to go faster and farther I'll definitely ditch my starter bike for something better. I want something that at least has disk brakes, and I've got a buddy that buys and works on lots of bikes so I don't think he'd steer me towards something too bad. My plan is to spend a greater part of my budget on high quality safety gear so I can keep that when I move on to my next bike.

Either that, or wait until I have the extra $1000 or so to get something better, but I want to get started soon!

What's the licensing process like in your area? In Michgan if you already have a driver's license you just have to take a basic riding safety course (mine is $25 and one weekend), and if you pass that you can go to the Secretary of State that day and get your full endorsement after you pass a written test and a vision test. I'm going to take some more advanced safety classes as well, but that's the bare minimum to get the licensing.

That's required for under 18 riders, but if you're older and already know how to ride (unlike me) you can just take a road test instead of the class. Regardless, I don't think we have any sort of learning/permit period as long as you already have a driver's license.

MSF is $155 through the state, and is a guaranteed endorsement if you pass. There are private schools as well.

You can go directly to the DMV without having taken the class and take the written and road test, as well.
