Fun fact - IMM/White Star specifically opted not to build the Olympic class for high speeds, in contrast to other large liners of the time, because of all the problems Cunard and HAPAG had had with their record breaking Luisitania/Mauretania and Deutschland . They opted for a more leisurely, but more comfortable (lower vibration) service speed, with additional advantages in reduced fuel consumption.

The reciprocating engines were also getting to be a bit outmoded by 1909, but IMM was known as a fairly conservative company, and still considered steam turbines too risky. They did have one low pressure turbine that just turned the center screw, but it wasn't essential and could be shut down to conserve fuel.
