I've seen a lot of people say "Nissan Leaves" and then there was that whole thing about voting on the plural form of Prius a while ago. Well, here's the thing: Proper plurals always - ALWAYS - take singular forms. This means that these cars are Priuses and Leafs. Not Prii/Prium and Leaves. There's no room for argument.

Nissan calls it the LEAF. so they should be LEAFs.

B-b-but I thought Toyota officially said that the plural of Prius was Prii...

That's a tricky case, though, because the proper name is already a plural and has no singular form. (Technically. I suppose you could say each player is a Maple Leaf, but I don't think that's what they were going for.) I assume that they're taking their name from the already-proper Maple Leaf of the flag or whatever, and that's why it isn't Leaves. I could be totally wrong here, but I do agree that whatever the reasoning is, the name is grammatically correct.

They did, but English doesn't work that way.

When it comes to linguistics, especially with English, there is room for argument. The word origin can also be a factor in how the plural is formed, so that rule isn't set in stone.

They're Japanese. Don't let them tell us how to speak our language.

But is Prii a proper noun Toyota created to mean multiple Prius cars?

I guess so, but then both forms are correct.

What if I know that and like making up plural forms because I have no respect for the singular item whatsoever? Pretending it's down-transitioned from being a proper noun to just a descriptive word is *fun*.

Leafs should be Leafs though

Ain't care. Calling 'em leaves and Prii anyway, and there's noting you can do to stop me.

I love how they have to refer to multiple Lexus as "Lexus vehicles" just to avoid this issue

That's fine and all when it comes to being "correct", but it's fun to call them Leaves and Prii. Just because. As long as you aren't writing a professional publication (Jalopnik writers excused) or it's clear you are just poking fun at them.

Which is just like The Toronto Maple Leafs
