My families Leaf, when the temperature is below 38 warns you that it is cold with a picture of a snowflake and text that says "Cold Temperature" on the main information screen in front of the driver. Do other cars do this? If so why?

BMWs have done this for as long as I can remember. My E36 dings at you if the temperature gets to or below 37 I think.

Since it's electric, the range and charge will be impacted by the temperature. Could it be there to remind you?

When the temperature gets down to about 33 or 34 degrees, my Cruze displays a little snowflake in the DIC and tells me to drive carefully due to possible icy conditions.

Yes. A Focus will start dinging at 5deg and again at 0 deg.

It's to warn you about icy roads.

Yes, nearly all of them including my old 1994 Volvo. The idea is to give you a heads up that there may be ice on the roads. In the case of the Leaf maybe to also warn of reduced battery range.

My 2009 Lancer did that, but it said "Possible icy roads".

I would like to hope and think that drivers would be aware of this without your car telling you though.

Yeah, lots of cars. The idea is if you're driving around in your little HVAC controlled wonder and temperature drops precipitously (heading to the mountains, cold front comes in on a long drive) you might not notice it since you're keeping yourself nice and toasty inside. It's to let you know that the outside temp is low and ice may start forming so be on the lookout. Some let you change the warning temp others don't.

My BMW dings at 38 as well. No clue why, as the roads can't really be icy until <32. It is to warn you of the potential of ice.

Yeah. I would like to believe that most drivers would be aware of that without a warning from their car though.

My Mom's 2010 Equinox and my 2003 GTI do it. The Equinox flashes it when it turns on, and I think my GTI just shows a little snowflake next to the temperature.

The Skoda I drove in Switzerland did this. I actually thought it was kind of nice because the extreme elevation changes meant we experienced ~25-30° temperature variations in a relatively short period of time. Let me know when I started to get to the point where ice might start cropping up. Not necessary, but a neat little feature. I think you could turn it off too.

I was driving over mountains once and it actually worked great. It would bing when I got high enough that it was cold enough still for the roads to be icy. But in the dead of winter, when the roads are probably always icy, it's a little less useful

It's the Leaf's polite way of saying, "FUCK YOU, I'M NOT DOING SHIT TODAY."

My car was thinking that this morning...it was very reluctant to get out of first.

Imagine you are on a long cross country trip (not in the Leaf though), and you get into the mountains or the sun is going down and while you sit in your heated box with some music on temperatures have dropped rapidly from when you got in the car in the afternoon wearing only a t-shirt, because it was still nice outside. I think that this is a much better safety feature than etching "Objects in mirror may be closer than they appear" into every mirror. BTW, do they still do this?

I'm guessing it's there to remind you that you will have reduced range because of how the cold effects the batteries.

Mine does it for possible ice.

For an electric car the cold will also decrease range.

My boyfriend's 2012 Altima constantly flashes "WARNING: TEMPERATURE xx DEGREES" in the instrument cluster when its around 32 or below. I thought it was odd for a regular old 4 cylinder vehicle.

Hi, sorry for such a late response! We like it quite a lot. It's really good for driving in suburbia. Range goes quickly at highway speeds, keep in mind. Nissan recommends you charge it up to 80% for maximum battery life. Charge to 80% the range in the summer is around 70 miles and in winter around 60. I personally would recommend leasing a Leaf because a)resale value is atrocious and b)the new Leaf is expected to be unveiled in the next few years. Also, if you lease charging it up to 100% all the time shouldn't be a big issue.
