I have to opportunity to attend a car app think tank and wanted to pick your brains for APP ideas that would be useful to either the car shopper or the enthusiast ?
So far I was thinking about a HOT or NOT style app that serves up 2 different cars.....you can vote one up or the other down. Mindless clicking I guess.
But is there something interesting/exciting or useful that does not exist?
I am afraid of showing up empty handed........
P.S. - I will certainly cut the winning idea in if I go forward!

for people who want to "get it on" with cars? There might be a niche market there.

I always thought an app where you could take a picture of a car, it would ID it for you, give you a bio of it, and save so you can keep track of what cars you've seen in the wild. A Pokedex(tm) for cars, if you will.
I want a cut if anyone actually makes this happen.

Car Event Mapping App.
so you can load it up and it pulls car events in the whole area overlay on a map with list option including distances, you can then get nav directions to the event.
Use example: Say I take the Montego out for a ride on a nice Saturday this spring and think "I wonder if there's an event going on anywhere" I open the App and by location proximity I can see the closest event. "Oh that sounds fun" Click, "Turn Left in 1 mile, destination on the right".
And boom I'm at a car show.
I'll take my royalty check in the mail.

Thats a good idea....not just car show but any cruise, off road excursion, drag race....all kinds of categories!

App that works as an OBDII scanner with a cable that runs between car and phone.

YEP!
Like I said, I'll expect that royalty cut lol
Also, the ability to create events on the move would be cool too

1. are there apps that can adjust ecu maps? obviously the ecu must have the capability in the first place.
2. a map/gps/nav app that lets you edit the route taken. i DO NOT want to take the lame route you chose for me mr apple, or mr google. i want the fun roads!
3. maybe something like above could be influenced by user generated "ranking" of roads. so when you punch in point A to point B, the app finds the high ranked roads, and makes a point to hit them, rather than just shortest distance
4. what about an app that provides intelligent, INTELLIGENT, recommendations, on say... improving mpgs based on driving style, or improving component longevity based on... shifting style and clutch engagement points... (i'd imagine a simple connection to the obd-2 system could give you these: to improve mpg, consider using a more gradual depression of the accelerator, consider using a higher octane fuel, consider releasing the accelerator sooner when approaching a stop light, STOP HITTING YOUR FUCKING BRAKES RANDOMLY WHILE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS :) )
5. how about an app that records some of the obd-2 info as above and gives you reports to show to insurance companies. like progressive or whoever is doing now, but at least YOU control the data, and can show what you want.
6. an app that disables all texting and emailing functions when the phone is moving >2mph?

car shopping app that tells pros and cons of each car, a specs comparison, and how these specs are vs the cost/consumption, such as HP/$, MPG/HP, that alerts the user of recalls of cars selected, etc. As for specs and performance, this site is a gold mine:

I'm sure this already exists somewhere, but could always be done better:
Maintenance reminders that also incude lots of how-tos. So it'll ping you when you should do your brakes and show you step by step how to if you need it. It'll also log data with an OBDII reader of you want, kind of like that Torque app or the other one that is made more for efficiency. But this one is more for maintenance. You can log trips, repairs, accidents, etc. as well.
So part service manual, part data logger, part maintenance minder. With a snazzy, useful interface.

I made an early version of this some time ago but killed it shortly after. It was a group tracker, like when driving as a convoy. My version predated push notifications so it was a little clunky but it would be neat to see the other cars update on the map fairly quickly, with the ability to send others a target destination and maybe even chat from within the app. I thought about it again recently and it would also be hilarious to integrate travel games, like the license plate game or something else so you can share photos.
Actually ignore this! I'm going to make it again myself...
EDIT: Clearly it isn't as original as I thought, because something like this exists almost in its entirety https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/convoy/…

On-the-fly ECU tuning using GPS & telemetry
AirBnB for garage space/tools.
Based on recent Oppo thread: For used-car shopping, an app that locates a qualified person near the location of a car so that person can inspect for you.

Oh my fucking god a billion times this:
“AirBnB for garage space/tools.”
Even in Brooklyn, a veritable DIY capital of the world, it’s impossible to find spaces you can work on your ride, it majorly sucks for NYC’s many gearheads.
