This happened in my school district just outside of Austin. I'd be interested to know exactly why the police felt the need to sweep the faculty parking lot with a drug dog, apparently unannounced. Because they can? Were they tipped off? I also wonder if this violates the 4th Amendment in any way.

Why isn't this shit legalised yet? I haven't smoked it myself but I can't for the life of me understand why it's illegal.

There is clearly a groundswell of support for issues like legalization of pot, same-sex marriage, etc. I can only hope Texas gets the stick out of its ass and changes the law. I'm not holding my breath.

Lies. Literally. I can't remember the whole story and I'm too lazy to look it up, but several decades ago someone published a bunch of bullshit about the dangers of marijuana, none of which were actually true. Everyone believed it, and for some reason we still can't convince people that it's safe.*

*Safer than tobacco, at least. Smoking anything is never really GOOD for you, obviously, but weed is by far the least harmful substance.

Same sex marriage is legal here in the UK at least. It's just ridiculous that I can go shopping and drive home with a full bottle of whiskey in the car, yet a little pot and you're in cuffs.

I don't think they'll legalise it for a while though, just because of the effort it would take. It would just remove so much criminal activity around the dealing of it and make the government a shit ton in taxes.

Well yeah it's obviously not good for you, but neither is pounding down 15 rum and cokes or smoking a cigar, yet I can do that legally.

You're right though people are scared of it. My stepdad used to grow a small plant and smoke occasionally in his youth, but if he mentions that to anyone now they look at him like he was a heroine addict.

Plus it doesn't have to be smoked. It can be taken in pill form, it can be eaten, it can be drank, it can be vaporized, etc.

Exactly. I've smoked a little and shared a pot brownie before... I have to say, it's not even that good. It tastes bad and hardly has a noticeable effect unless you consume a lot.

You know, exactly the same as alcohol.

Oh, for sure! Marijuana for medical purposes is just incredible. It's proven to work, and it doesn't cause its users to become heroin addicts. It pisses me off that it's still illegal in most places here...

It might be like alcohol in that you become accustomed to it and start to enjoy the taste. I couldn't even sniff whiskey 5 years ago, and now I love it.

You can thank the pharmaceutical companies and the good ole FDA for that.

Things are more decentralized in US so some states have legal same sex marriage and other states have legal pot. I think it helps move things ahead.

Questionable search or not, it's pretty stupid to have weed in your car in the faculty parking lot at a school. It was apparently visible through the window of the car, so even if there hadn't been a drug sniffing dog there, anyone walking by who peeked in the car could've seen the pot.

It's super easy to not get arrested for pot. Keep it at your house. Avoid going anywhere with pot on your person or in your vehicle. Every once in a while you might want to bring some pot with you somewhere, but never, ever, leave the stuff in your car. Especially in a visible place.

My kids go to RRISD too, although we live in Travis county. I would be furious if their teacher was arrested for stupid shit like this.

Austin just had its first same sex marriage yesterday:

I live in the county also, and despite this malarkey, I'm very happy to be dealing with the TCSO instead of APD. I saw that bit about the first marriage. Things are going in a pretty good direction in some areas, but not so much in others, depending on what you support, of course.

Oh, I agree completely. It was a bonehead move by the teacher. I sure hope she wasn't blizzed on the job. But there are lots of unanswered questions here. Why were the doing the sweep? Is it SOP? Did somebody with a grudge drop a dime on the teacher? Just how visible was it?

Many years ago, my brother and I were sitting in the car smoking some dope with the windows open in a mall parking lot. A guy walked by the window and said, "Smells pretty good. Keep an eye out for the cops." My brother replied, "It's a good thing you're not one." The guy said, "You never know...."

4th Amendment doesn't apply on school grounds. At least not to the kids - don't know about teachers.

The Drug Free Zone policy in TX is pretty comprehensive and the charges are similar to weapons charges. She's boned if the DA goes that route.

And no, there's no 4th amendment challenge here. It was in plain view with the car on public property within 1000 ft of a school.

Why they did the sweep? I'd guess either there's been a rash of incidents in the school or random periodic sweeps are a part of their normal operation. I know, around here, they regularly do sweeps around public parks with play equipment. Haven't looked in a while, but they used to show up on the the blotter all the time.

The only info I could find was this blurb which mentions,

Police say the principal requested a school resource officer use a K-9 to search the parking lot.

Interesting. I still think there's more to this story than a simple random search. Maybe we'll learn more in time. Thanks for the research.
