Here's a Unimog 416.
If you ticked the right option box you got extra, low gears. When I say low, I don't just mean low or very low. I mean really low. The first of your really low gears worked out at 4000:1 overall. The maximum in said gear was 0.11 kmh or the length of a football field in an hour. At max revs.
Let your Unimog trickle along with the engine ticking over and it would take most of a working day to travel the length of your field.

And I'm guessing if said football field was an 80-degree incline, it would take the same amount of time?
Also, is that like "negative first" gear? I can't imagine you'd start there in ordinary driving. The regular first gear is probably one or two higher, right?

Unimog 416: When you absolutely have to get there, but it doesn't matter when.

If it had traction, it'd climb anywhere!
Yes, that was an emergency, special purpose gear. There were plenty more to choose from if you wanted to move at a visible speed..
Current Unimogs are more conventionally geared, even if you go for the extra low option.

Reminds me of the art piece " Machine with Concrete " which is a motor running at 200rpms hooked to a series of 1/50 reduction gears, the final one of which would take over two trillion years to complete a revolution. Said final gear is also embedded in concrete.

In my old Dodge Ram I had a 5.38:1 1st with a 2.72:1 transfer case reduction in low and 4.10:1 rears for a grand total of 60:1. And I thought that was impressive. But I think I could make a full 4mph at redline.

That's ridiculous. And awesome.
What's the practical application of going that slowly though?

The Unimog can be used as a farm tractor so you can plow fields.

You'd still want to plow a bit faster than that, no?

If it's hard ground maybe. You have the needed torque.

That's quite impressive. My truck currently is at 35:1 (4.14, 2.72, 3.08) and even if I changed the rear to 4.11 that's still only 46:1. Now you've got me wondering which truck has had the lowest crawl ratio stock...

I was thinking the same thing myself.
