In place of a track, today I'm bringing you a whole album. Heard about this on NPR this morning and it's super cool. The band combines their music with vocals supplied from samples of broadcasts and mission control chatter to tell the story of the space race. I get pretty geeked over this era in history, so this one definitely struck a chord with me. The music is solid throughout, with lots of neat effects used to depict the scene musically. Standout tracks include "Gagarin" and "Go".

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

The whole album is available to stream on NPR's website, although it won't be released until next week. I would highly recommend listening to the whole thing straight through if you can, especially if you're already familiar with the story. I had a great time listening to this one, and it's definitely going in my collection when it comes out.

This is beautiful. Space never fails to get me right in the feels.

Some space-themed albums that you might like if you enjoyed that:

Also, the speech clips in those tracks remind me a lot of some of the work of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and A Silver Mt. Zion, although in their case, it's usually either poetry or distinctly-unsettling found audio:
