So, took the Infiniti to get MD inspection

It failed, which we knew it would, because Maryland inspection is super strict, but it needs a few more things than we expected. Here's what we're looking at.

Left inner tie rod ($25 or less)

Right control arm bushing ($20 or less)

Left outer CV boot ($20-$25)

Muffler (already knew) ($100)

Wiper Blades (also already knew) ($20)

All 4 rotors (under $100)

Radiator core support where the cross member bolts is rusted out (very common issue with these cars) ($150-$200)

Headlights are oxidized and need polished (obvious, can do myself) ($10)

Alignment (under $40)

I'm hoping I can do all this for under $500 or so, and I think I can. I'm going to shoot for under $400. Still a pain, though. We'll do it all ourselves, so we don't have to pay a shop, with the exception of an alignment. I mean, considering it's a 15 year old car with 250k miles that we paid $800 for, it's not too bad. Just hurts the wallet.

SURPRISE! Maryland's inspection makes no sense at all. You get your vehicle to conform to this stringent inspection only one time while you own it , and then they don't give a shit until someone else buys it.

It really doesn't make sense, but it's easier doing it only once. When I lived in WV, inspections had to be done yearly, and that can be a whole lot more costly. At least in MD, once it's done, I don't have to worry about it anymore. And at 250k miles, I doubt I'll be selling it anytime soon anyways, especially as nice of a car it is. I'll put all the parts on, and then I won't have to be bothered by it in another year.

MD Inspection sucks. Had a 3 inch light scratch on the windshield about halfway across but it was in the field of vision, so i had to buy a new windshield. If you live in MD just add $1000+ to the price of any used car you are bringing into the state for an Inspection and repairs. And that is with an honest mechanic.

It is ridiculous. Luckily, I don't have to add that $1000, since my stepdad is a mechanic, and I don't have to pay him for labor, unless I just give him money for courtesy.

I just did an online check. CarParts.com can get me all I need, minus wiper blades, clean headlights, and obviously, an alignment, for $308, plus $135 S+H, for a total of $445ish. But, I am going to look around otherwise as well. I'm hoping I can beat that price. We budgeted $600 in repairs for the car when we bought it, which it looks like we are going to get very close to.

Also, don't delay on that CV boot if it's torn. A torn CV boot leads to dirt and debris getting into the grease inside the axle, which leads to a very quick deterioration of the axle and an eventual snapping of the axle, usually under load (aka while driving).

Are you able to do all the labor yourself?

Wow, you're not kidding about the interface. That design is awful, but I will check it out in more detail.
