This shit makes me BEYOND ANGRY. I don't care how old you are. If it's 18 or 81 if you can't safely operate your vehicle you shouldn't be driving. Not ticketing old people out of pity is endangering people's lives. This sure as hell would have ended differently if a mom with her 2 kids wandered in front of the "out of control vehicle". You are responsible for maintaining control of your vehicle, if you aren't in control of it - get out of it.

2 quick stories:

1) My parents used to own a gas station in NJ, an old lady put a civic through a cinder block wall because she "thought she was in reverse" but was in drive and plowed into it. She agreed to pay to fix the wall and the other customer's car, the cop didn't give her any tickets because he felt bad (he admitted this). for the record, if she WAS in reverse, she would have shot out into traffic and caused an accident if she hit the gas that hard. Yes she was driving a Buick.

2) I was changing a title at a Michigan Secretary of State office (we use SoS instead of a DMV here) an old lady with a walker who took 5 minutes (literally I timed it, I was very bored waiting) to walk 10 feet to the counter was demanding her license renewal, she failed the eye exam and they refused until she got a note from her eye dr. - Yes, a note from her eye dr is all she needed to be allowed to drive again.

With all of the crazy "nanny tech" we need in everything, they still let old people drive beyond an age where it's safe. It's INSANE

That guy is too Wisco to handle.

(Which is of course why he is driving an old Buick LeSabre.)

You're right about the forgetting which gear you're in bullshit. I've backed up slightly in a tight space, then went to drive forwards out without switching to first. I noticed the car lurch backwards slightly then stopped and selected the correct gear. If you're gunning it then the gear you're in isn't the issue.

He may not have had control in the panic, but he was shifting like a long haulin, drag racing, wheel burnin sumbitch.

Yep. The low reaction time and how hard she hit the gas meant it was trouble no matter which way she went.

I was at the station that day too. That was a LOUD hit.

This is the thing, what is a tiny mistake for me (edging back a foot or so before stopping) can turn into a crash with an impaired driver.

yep, we've all done it. The difference is we don't go 20 feet and put another car through a cinder block wall.

Yeah mistakes are common, but a half decent driver limits them to minor mistakes. I don't think making older drivers redo the driving test is fair, but requiring sight tests and such should be enforced. Say after 65 you need a sight test every year or two to make sure you're in good enough health to drive.

Is it bad that when I first saw the video with the LeSabre getting hit right at the beginning, I immediately wondered whether this grocery store gets an unusual percentage of elderly customers.

Oh, also, $2400 in repairs on that car likely means its totaled.

It is in fact a real grocery store chain. A friend of mine nicknamed it the Wobbly Sow.
