I'm aware that this 300SL has been somewhat resto-moded, and while not my first choice, I can get over it. But those AMG wheels, while perfectly fine on their own, manage to ruin the whole car for me. I just can't like it.

It's nothing to do with being a snob at all, I assure you of this. I my self LOVE resto moded cars. Fuck old tech, gimme that new tech in that sexy old body. But those wheels are an awful choice. the trick with a good resto mod is to upgrade the tech and make the car better than before while maintaining the aesthetics that drew you to the car in the first place. those wheels do no fit that body, even in the slightest. those wheels are just an awful choice!

I shall join you in your snobbery on this point. Either the scalloped spoke or twinned spoke wheel would be better *if* they had to have a modern AMG wheel.

Better than either would be something like a Minilite, if one was still set on moving away from the Benz big-hubcap style wheel.

Interesting, that's on the low end of what 300SLs go for. It would seem that regardless of people's opinions of resto-mods, doing it to a top-tier classic rarely helps the value.

Here is the amazing background on the car. Only 11 of these were made. From the RM Auction description.

Only 11 of these bespoke SLs were converted by AMG between 1996 and 2009, with each car costing in excess of €1 million to build. Five of those completed were for the Royal Family of Brunei, whilst the remaining six were delivered to other qualified customers. Eight of those 11 examples were coupés, with half being outfitted with right-hand drive and the other half left-hand drive, such as this example. This AMG was purchased by DD Racing in Germany directly from AMG shortly after it was rebuilt in 2001, and it was initially registered in Germany. In 2005, the car then found its way into the hands of a collector in Hong Kong, where it has remained ever since and has been carefully stored in a climate-controlled environment.

it ain't snobbish. Sometimes the right wheels make a car better and sometimes they can make them so much worse. Believe me, you would not believe how many times I've had to avert my eyes at cool looking cars because the owners put the stupidest looking wheels on them.
