From the 1935 launched, and recently scrapped, Kalakala Ferry from Washington. Some key parts were salvaged to display at a local restaurant, Salty's in West Seattle.

And they're tiny, compared to what would have been in the big diesel engined ocean liners of the time - Britannic, Georgic , etc.

There's probably enough metal in that thing for ... what, 6 0r 7 Civics?

That's what makes this installation of old Seattle-become-art so great. After a near food coma we can waddle outside and check out the awesome machinery until our stomachs regain composure.

Remember, WWII and all it's heavy machinery was right around the corner back then. It's amazing what manpower could do.

Here is a pic of the Kalakala. I did a writeup on her scrapping a few weeks ago. Sad, but probably for the best. Salty's is one of our favorite restaurants in Seattle. We had our wedding reception there, so lots of good memories.

It looks like it came out of a Cadillac 572.

Anderson had it for sale for quote a while for the low low price of $1 and all the associated costs of dealing with it. I spent more time than I care to admit fantasizing about a houseboat (with a kick ass garage) conversion.

That's not the biggest one they make. ..
Their 14 cylinder engine has a 300 tonne crank!
