Kinja'd!!!

I made the mistake of attempting to make a reservation at a nice restaurant for Valentine's day "only" 4 days in advance. There are tons of great restaurants here in Madison, and most of them were booked solid by the time I called. Oops.

Kinja'd!!!

After much calling around to places that had no seats left for Valentine's dinner, I was able to get a slightly-earlier-than-ideal 6 pm reservation at !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . It's been open for about a year, and is fantastic. The chef has his own pig farm where he raises heritage breed pigs—hence the name of the restaurant, Heritage Tavern. They have foxes on their menu because the guy's name is Dan Fox.

You know the old saying about "if you have to ask the price, you can't afford it"? Well, their Valentine's Day menu looks great, but it also doesn't have any prices on it.

When I made the reservation, I asked what the price was for the Valentine's dinner. $75/person for the 4-course dinner, and I forget how much for the wine pairing, or cocktail pairing, or whatever booze they're selling along with it. Which is more than I was hoping to spend on Valentine's dinner, but hey this was the only damn table I could find and it's a lovely restaurant, so whatever.

It might almost be worth it, because my gf is already very happy about the choice, and this is some of the stuff these guys make:

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Now I just gotta hope that I don't get too stuffed at dinner so we can take care of other important Valentine's Day activities.

I've done that before, and was actually considering breaking out the new pasta crank I got for Hanukkah. But I'm working 9-2 tomorrow so I'd rather not go right from work to prepping a fancy Valentine's dinner.

Not sure about the portion sizes, but DAMN that presentation is awesome! That said, I hate going out for valenties day, so I usually wind up cooking something fancy at home for the wife and I. This year I'll be doing seared Ahi tuna sashimi with zaru soba, black sesame green beans, and a good bottle of cold sake to go with it all.

That menu looks pretty good but mostly it looks like over priced yuppie bullshit. Also there's a much shorter trip to the bed at your house.

Oh you better pre-eat. When I go to nicer restaurants I always pre-eat or else I leave hungry.

Casinos have the best breakfast buffets.

Sorta ran into the same problem. Made a reservation at a nice enough place that we'd been wanting to go to. Check reservation 3 days before, just to make sure everything is right. Realize restaurant changed menu and prices, so it is now more expensive and less appetizing. Scramble to find another place. End up going out for dinner on Friday night, and hopefully I'll get to cook on Saturday!

Also, how had I not heard of Heritage Tavern before? I must've walked right by it every time I visited, and it looks excellent!

It's relatively new. Been open for maybe a year or so? It's on E Mifflin right off the capital square, next to the Bartell Theater. The space was Cafe Montmartre for a long time, then briefly was Underground Kitchen but they had a fire which burned down the whole building including the apartments above. The building was rebuilt and now Heritage Tavern is there. The Underground folks went and opened Forequarter which is also great.

Strip club is only $10 cover, and complimentary breakfast buffet starts at 2 a.m.

And no reservations, too. All you have to do is elbow the other walruses out of your way. I am up for that challenge!

Usually the fancy restaurants here aren't too skimpy on the portion size. This is 4 courses, I'm sure it will be enough. Plus, it's Valentine's, don't want to have a big meal anyway.

I'd heard of Forequarter, though didn't have a chance to visit while I was out there. I'll have to try it once I'm out there more permanently.

While I'm sure this Chef is very competent, it appears that he relies on micro greens (every dish has them) for presentation. To me, this is unacceptable.
