It appears the biggest problem is carbon build up in the engine. Besides this nasty gremlin the car appears for the most part to be pretty reliable.

Is it one of those... because the cars are never exercised, they get gummed up? The BMW E39 M5 appears to be like that. Cars that get hammered on actually don't have a lot of build-up problems. Those that putter around town go through very expensive therapy sessions, somewhat regularly.

Yeah, lot of that in BMWland also. Dealers/owners basically beta-testing the cars.
