This is definitely worth a read.
It seems that the car and the fund raiser are freeing him from more than just a shitty commute.
The details about his relationship, his living conditions, and his sudden move answered a lot of questions I asked every time I read about Mr Robertson.
I hope the people helping him use the money set him up to get the most out of it.

The sense of entitlement some have people is saddening. "Oh one of my neighbors came onto a bunch of money? Fucker better give me some if he knows what's good for him". People suck.

Hopefully he moves closer to work. A shorter commute would mean more time and money to built his new car into a Rally Taurus.

I wanted to put "FREE AT LAST" on that lead photo of him smiling, since it seems he's now free of that living situation, terrible commute, and 10 rear rut, but...

The last sentence is the best.
His landlord/girlfriend sounds scary as hell; it's hard not to get the sense that she was using him, with the threat always looming that she could kick him out. I hope there's no way she can make a "common law" marriage suit stick.
Did a little digging - not an issue in Michigan:
"Long story short, in Michigan, unless you have lived with someone with the agreement that you are married since December 31, 1956, Michigan will not acknowledge your common-law marriage. In order to be married, you must apply for a marriage license, and have your marriage solemnized or authorized by persons specified by Michigan law. This also means that in Michigan, in order to receive all the benefits that a spouse receives (health care, property, and inheritance); just living together is not enough."

Well, it sounds like he had plenty of problems before the money. No way a room in Detroit in a shared house should cost $220 a week. That's really weird.

Man that just seems like an awful situation. I'm glad he's getting this money. Seems like a humble guy.

The only thing that bothers me about the article is how many times they alluded to the new area he was thinking of moving to. Really? How about you don't give any details to the people who threatened him for cash? People are assholes, vindictive assholes. I would be worried they would think they still owe him, especially since he turned his back on them.
But it sounds like this whole situation could not have happened to a better person. Good on him for keeping his head on straight and making good decisions.

Even in states where it would apply, I don't think it would fit this scenario (thank god) because they lived in different units.
Also, 220 a week = 880 a month for half a house, this dude was being taken advantage of.
My first mortgage payment for my little house out in metro detroit wasn't 880 with taxes and insurance.

You know what gets me the most about this.
If you look back in American History, we used to be the type of people who jumped to support our fellow man. One man's over taxation could have started our revolution.
Now - one man's gift is a target for his fellows to go after.
I'm not sure what caused this change, the inability for people to just be happy with what they have in this extremely consumerist world or if it's that people have been pushed down so far they are so desperate.
I want to be the type of people we used to be again. I'm so glad people helped this guy and I hope he can get the protection he needs. Even I have to go down to downtown and walk with him. No one should be made to feel unsafe because of what they have.

I knew something like this shit was going to happen. This is why I suggested he be given a decent car and some money for up keep, and the multi hundred thousand dollar surplus be used to start a charitable organization to help others in his situation. Not only does giving one man a free car and a ton of money cause shit like this to happen (whatever that says about the unfortunate state of our society), but it also does very little address the reason behind the fact that there are people who have to walk 21 miles to work or have to work shitty jobs because they don't have adequate transportation.

I think his biggest problem was the reason he allowed himself to be charged $880/month for a single bedroom in that house.

But seriously, you're view of modern culture is on point with what I wish the world was still like. I chalk it up to excessive reproduction brought upon by government incentives and lack of quality child rearing.
Capitalism is key in America but not the point that we need shun our common man who may be having troubles. This is not to say that we need to be taxed in order to assist these people, but ot say that all government aid programs should be run by private citizens or businesses. That way their is more incentive for citizens to give to welfare organizations, and not grumble about it becuase they are taxed almost to the point that they cannot provide for their own families.

I got screwed on common law here in Ohio. My ex and I were common law for 18 years and I even used his last name.
Once we 'divorced', it was a nightmare. Can't get a divorce without a marriage license, and changing my name back...they wanted to see the divorce papers.
Lather, rinse repeat. Took me almost a year to get it settled.

I'm glad to hear he's meeting with a financial adviser. Frankly, that $350k, if invested properly, could provide more annual interest income than he makes right now at his job. Or it would if most of it doesn't get sucked away by taxes — the worst kind of theft.
