Kinja'd!!!

Does anyone know much about this? (the new rules, that is - not dumping Pepsi on phones...) I've got an iPhone 5 on Sprint that I've had over two years, so I assume that means it can be unlocked since I have completed the two year agreement I signed.

1) Can I take it to another carrier, perhaps installing my AT&T SIM card into it. Are there other restrictions that Sprint won't remove that would prevent this?

2) Are there any other carriers (or MVNOs) that I can use this phone with that might be a better deal than the $100/mo. I'm spending with Sprint? I don't do a lot of calling or texting, but I do want to continue with unlimited data.

Thanks!

you have sprint, like me, which means you have a special iPhone that will not work on other carriers. Yup, sprint sucks.

You have a Sprint phone. It will only work on other Sprint networks like Ting and Virgin Mobile.

What you need is an unlocked GSM phone.

Read this: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/25/ver…

It may explain better than I can. Basically the FCC made these phones ship unlocked.

I don't know if it'll hold true on the Sprint version but both use GSM networks so it might.

Well, it does have a SIM card and apparently can be configured to use GSM networks whilst abroad, so why can't I use it on a GSM network in the US?

Yes, Sprint sucks...

LOL - yeah, I noticed that after I watched the video. But it makes me wonder if Pepsi can polish a chrome bumper as well as Coke?..

Well, it does do GSM if unlocked even though it is currently used primarily on Sprint's CDMA network, and I think I can get it unlocked since I've been paying the plan for over two years, so I think it's all possible. But Sprint being Sprint, there's probably some other catch or loophole that will @#%$ me over and prevent this from happening.

I almost got a sprint 4s to work on t-mobile, but the data would barely work and the phone just worked very poorly overall.

Here's a great thread

100/mo - that is expensive.

In Canada, if you are willing to have really expensive service outside of big cities (roaming isn't just out of country, but anywhere that isnt a Mobilicity zone), you can get unlimited everything for 35 a month.

Well if Sprint tries to prevent you from unlocking your phone, you can make an FCC complaint and they get to drop the banhammer.
