BrownDogWelding's post about doing a lap of America got me thinking about what a true lap would take.

Say you take the roads closest to the borders and coasts as possible (not the closest freeway, but closest road). How many miles would it be? But more importantly how long would it take?
Or are we doing this wrong, should a true lap be hitting every state (minus Alaska and Hawaii) at least once?

I vote roads closest to the coasts/borders.

Or should it be a lap around the states? Encircling, yet never going over the border?

That's got to be approaching 10,000 miles, and some really slow going in some spots...
