...and make me want to throw my head through a wall.
So the other day I was in study hall on the computer, doing my tri-daily car news search (Sometimes I do more often, but usually I get at least 3 times during the school day to escape the stupidity). All of the sudden, this kid behind me was like "Did you hear about the new Lincoln Continental?" At first I was really confused, and gave him a puzzled look, so he elaborated. And this is what made me want to cry. He said "Yeah, it's like a racecar or something, it's the Lincoln Continental GT, I can't believe you haven't heard of it." At that point I knew he was in fact actually talking about the Bentley Continental GT, and when I said, "Oh, you mean the Bentley?" He responded "Yeah, Bentley, Lincoln, they're like the same company right?"
AND HE WAS BEING SERIOUS. I gave him a very snide "No, not at all." And didn't talk to him for the rest of the period.
Every single person at my school is like this. They either don't know anything at all whatsoever about cars, and will never care, or are extremely misinformed or biased and are too stubborn to learn any different. So there I am, trying to explain why I would rather spend money on something that handles worth a damn than on a giant lifted diesel brodozer to people who think Richard Petty still races and Bentleys and Lincolns are one and the same. Lord help me.

I have always wanted to meet a ricer. It would be so fun hearing all the BS he would say. Sadly there are no ricers at my school.

I was once told that a Bentley Continental cost $22k. IT DOESN'T COST 22 THOUSAND DOLLARS.

These guys aren't ricers, in fact, I'm about 99% sure they're worse.

I have met a ricer, I wanted to strangle them but at the same time I was holding back so much laughter it hurt

I hate it when you start a conversation with someone and it seems like they know about cars, and then it turns out they're as mechanically literate as a sack of potatoes, and then you don't know how to end the conversation because they're so misinformed you don't know whether to just stop talking or try to spend time explaining things so they don't stay complete idiots.

Sounds like the people at my old high school. Over half the vehicles in the parking lot are pickups, and half of those are lifted with stacks.
![]() 02/08/2015 at 22:55 |
|
Yes, all the time. I usually just stop talking. Also the reason I rarely talk cars in school unless I know I can hold a knowledgeable conversation about it.

How much do you know about Shakespeare? How much do you know about fishing? Bicycling? Bird calls? Politics? (don't answer these) My point is that not everybody is educated in everything and that's okay, neither are you.

Don't hold it against him. He's just dreaming of a world where lincoln kicks caddy's ass. O and the sky's blue.... actually it's pretty Fucking grey and i would like for it to stop snowing
![]() 02/08/2015 at 22:56 |

I drive I truck, but only because at the time it was the only thing I could find that I could afford, but the amount of people that think pickups are the chariots of the gods makes me want ask where the spark plugs are on there diesel and see how many hours it takes for them to realize they're fucking retarded.

Sometimes it fun to do the bait and switch, and talk about whatever BS non-existent car they believe in until they finally say something so rediculous you can tell them everything they know is a lie and then walk away.
![]() 02/08/2015 at 23:00 |
|
I understand that, but I don't make an effort to talk in depth about Shakespeare because I know I don't know anything about it, it's the people that talk without actually being informed that upset me.

I went to an import meet on Saturday.
I drove my CRX but mentioned that I autocross my Sonic. He told me he used to autocross, then went on to say he could beat me in my Sonic with my CRX because 'it's all about the driver'
...I'm pretty damned good at autocross, and my CRX couldn't touch my Sonic in its current state.
He also wanted to race a Corvette in his Civic wagon

He can keep dreaming, maybe he just has a man-crush on Matthew McConaughey...

There are three Bentley Continental GTs at my school: A first gen, a facelifted V12, and a V8.
The V12 sound like vacuum cleaners, but the V8 is a monster.

I have a few friends that I can talk to about things a little bit, but even then I have to watch for when I talk to much and their eyes start to glaze over, it's alright though, I've slowly tried to inform them. So far it's kinda worked.

Jeeze dude, haven't you ever played Need for Speed? You always have to race better cars, it's about that skills dude. Anybody would know that.

Sounds to me like he was trying to engage in a little conversation about cars, was misinformed, and got the cold shoulder. Getting two cars called the Continental mixed up is hardly a sin, and it's not like he ever tried to convince you that Bentley and Lincoln were the same. I can't hate the guy based on what you shared with us.
Something that's actually upsetting is when people spread misinformation with confidence. I remember talking to this guy in high school chemistry who was 100% certain that a two-stroke engine was a 2 cyl, a four-stroke a 4-cyl, etc. He couldn't even consider ideas other than his own.
![]() 02/08/2015 at 23:14 |

Yeah, I guess I paraphrased a little in my description, he was pretty insistent actually that they were the same, I actually had to look it up and show him pictures and articles before he believed me. If it was just a little slip up I would understand but this wasn't the first time this kid tried to ramble on about something he claimed to know about but really didn't, I just finally couldn't stand it and needed to vent.

It must be the Spirit of McConaughey seeping into all those with relation to Lincolns and robbing them of brain cells

I know that feel. I know a kid who insists the Jeep Grand Cherokee ended production in 2011 and was replaced by the Cherokee. His friend drives a 2013 Grand Cherokee. I know another kid who thought the BRZ had 500 hp and awd. Another girl asked me what a Ferrari was, as in she never heard of them. Some people...

One person is all I want, just one that I can hold legitimate conversations about anything car related with, but I have yet to find somebody around here, and it makes me quite sad. That's why I come on here, there's always somebody to talk to and it makes my metal-heart happy.
![]() 02/08/2015 at 23:34 |

Keep looking. There's bound to be someone. There's this one girl I know who really wants an El Camino and me and her talk about it sometimes.

I could beat you in your Sonic with your CRX.
I'm pretty damned gooder at autocross than you

The problem is that I go to school with a graduating class of 63, not many people I don't already know

I have a V12. I've met people at car shows that have said they never knew engines were made that big.
Oh, and my V12 has "back traction."
(that was at a Cars & Coffee event, of all places).
Invite these people to shows and meets and actual events like autocross or a drag strip. Don't have to actually run, just spectate and talk to people. You'll meet other really cool people, and they'll learn how much of a dumbass they are are. Eventually, of course, but probably not for a long long time.

a good buddy of mine's a ricer...
He claims his stock SVT focus has a cobra R transmission, and can do 0-60 in 4.8 seconds. Despite his complete realization on how BS this is, he does actually drive pretty well, and is an exceptionally nice guy

I'd love to see the state of a Conti that was only 22k...

I don't think you could. I think my Sonic is definitely faster than my CRX in their current states, and I'm almost certainly a good enough driver to be faster in a faster car.
I don't even know how fast the Sonic will be this year, I haven't done autocross with the rear swaybar yet and I have a set of Hankook Ventus RS-3s on the way. I think it's going to be a lot faster than people will want to give it credit for...

He wasn't being serious, he knows that Lincoln and Bentley aren't the same. He's just covering his ass so he looks like a douchebag instead of looking stupid or ignorant.

on the plus side, someone school-aged was excited about what they thought was a Lincoln!
Hmm, I wonder if/when Lincoln wanted to resurrect the Continental name, if there would be an issue with I and VAG which owns Bentley, seeing as Lincoln used it for several decades, including for coupes, convertibles, and sedans.

A guy once tried to tell me that his neighbor bought a Continental GT in cash for 100k. I was like
A) they start at @150 (this was 6 years ago) bullshit
B) is your neighbor a drug kingpin? Who has that much in cash?

my mother in law was talking about what she would want after her VW Tiguan goes. She thought Toyota Prism would be nice. Yes she said prism, you know the little hybrid thing they make...... she wants something cheaper and easier to maintain. Would never have an American. Apparently they all leak massive quantities of oil.

Ive concluded its better to continue hearing all the BS. Walking away is rude (i dont mind walking away if ill never see him in my life) but usually in school you see people frequently.
I dont want to waste my energy explaining everything. Specially beecause they wont get anything of what im deescribing

Buddy of mine used to have an employee that drove a Taurus and was always challenging him and his co-workers to a drag race and peeling out and shit. Mind you: This wasn't an SHO Taurus. This was just Bob and Marge's 1995 Taurus with blacked out windows (which, admittedly, probably added 5 HP). Complete and utter dipshit.
