Do we have any on Oppositelock? I ask because I would love to hear what it's like to truly own one or a few of these amazing vehicles. Ofcourse if someone has a rare or interesting vehicle I would love to hear about that as well. I look forward to reading you guys' responses.

rb1971 has a Maserati Granturismo Sport (and BMW 1M, BMW E9, BMW Z3M, and suicide-door Lincoln Continental).

Are you kidding?
All of us have supercars.
In our minds. :(

I know there are a few 12C and 458 owners around, along with some Ford GTs, but I'd rather let them say which they own, instead of outing them myself.

![]() 02/06/2015 at 11:23 |

There's always a debate about what's a "supercar" per se so I find myself using the term exotic. That way for example the i8 - which is cool but is not really a track attack car in the same way a 458 or 918 would be - is certainly included. Historically this meant Masers were in the mix (I will admit personal bias here), but with the new cars coming out that probably is no longer strictly the case. I like the new Ghibli and it's great there is an Italian competitor to the 5er and E Class, but it's not an exotic. Still sounds great
![]() 02/06/2015 at 11:23 |

12c and 458 are badass but did you say FORD GT?!?! Contrary to my name, I freaking love that car!!! I'm excited now. Please GT owner reveal yourself!

![]() 02/06/2015 at 11:28 |

You don't have to change it on my account. :) I think we all use the word supercar a little bit differently, but I'm no lexicographer.
![]() 02/06/2015 at 11:28 |
|
I'm sure having any Ferrari would be awesome.
![]() 02/06/2015 at 11:29 |
|
Lol, it's just a Toyota MR2. It's awesome, but definitely not a supercar, though you'd be surprised at how often people assume that it is. Yep, I take it out to autocross, and am in the middle of prepping it for crapcan racing and rally.
![]() 02/06/2015 at 11:29 |

![]() 02/06/2015 at 11:31 |

Eh.
After Harris' article "How Ferrari Spins," as a brand I could really care less. They may indeed be the most wonderful cars ever made, I care not. Treating your fan-base and ownership like a cult is stupid.

![]() 02/06/2015 at 11:33 |

![]() 02/06/2015 at 11:34 |

Lol. So would I. I like to boast that I would drive a supercar every day but if actually given the chance I probably wouldn't.

![]() 02/06/2015 at 11:35 |

"but I'm no lexicographer."
Oh my god, you can move stuff with your mind????
![]() 02/06/2015 at 11:36 |
|
How long had you been holding on to that one, just waiting for the right moment to drop it?
![]() 02/06/2015 at 11:37 |
|
Both.
The only Ferrari I like anymore is the F40. Just because of what it is.
It also helps that I will never be able to afford one anyway. And even if I could, would get something different because I want something different. Current lottery millions supercar favorite is the Balboni Gallardo. Or possibly a Singer 911.
![]() 02/06/2015 at 11:37 |
|
Me too, I mean I don't see my life ever getting to the point where I can own one. The worst part of super cars is that once they get old they go back up in value unlike every other car. I would be happy to just ride in one haha!
![]() 02/06/2015 at 11:38 |

Life's boring if every car you own is a slight variation on the same thing :D

I bought the thing for practically nothing in the middle of nowhere, ganked as much as I could for the various classes, and rebuilt the suspension and hubs. That's pretty much it for mods. Just lightened and a suspension upgrade. It's probably sitting right around 2000 lbs right now. It's pretty quick. Not necessarily in a straight line, but the thing turns like nothing I've ever driven. It will go toe to toe with some very expensive cars at autocross and come out on top. The last two times I took it out for autocross, there were no braking points at all for my car because of how much grip it has.
![]() 02/06/2015 at 11:42 |

That's messed up.
The F40 is badass.
Nice choices. I like the stripe on the Balboni. How much is a Singer?

So would I. However, it's crazy how much maintenance is supposedly on some of those cars. I heard a Carrera GT service is like $20k because they drop the engine or something.

I wouldn't know so I'll take your word for it. Lol. Nice collection though!
![]() 02/06/2015 at 11:47 |

What's messed up? My choice to prefer something other than cars from a brand that treats owners like scum and games the press to make themselves out to be better than they are even though there is zero need to do so?
That is why I like the F40 and only the F40. It's just so damn cool as a car.
A Singer is probably around $300k. Give or take, depending on how you tailor it.

Manuél Ferrari, AKA Rusto, doesn't have a Ferrari as far as I am aware, though I do believe he's in the process of searching for either a Testarossa, 355, or something from that era to buy. He currently has an M3 (forget which gen) with the SMG gearbox and I believe it was a 997 Porsche 911 with the manual gearbox.

Meh, that's really more of a Subaru bro or ricer thing. When I brought my blue BRZ to autocross, all of the Subaru bros who are out there for the first time would start chatting with me about mods and how fast their car is and then laugh at the fact that all I did to my BRZ was change the tires and say that I "gotta turbo it, bro." Then when they find out that adding a huge turbo doesn't necessarily make them fast drivers and that I'm ten seconds or so clear of them, they ragequit. Most of the older guys who show up in Porsche's, Lotii, and other things like that tend to be a bit more in the know and realize that having the tools don't matter if you don't know how to use them. They're also more likely to be there because they want to have fun as opposed to having something to prove or show off, though you'd be surprised at how quick some of those guys are. That being said, I've been seeing an increasing number of people who decide that they can flip cars, buy a Ferrari 360, take it out, spin, and then leave before the first runs are even done. At this point, I almost expect it to be that guy when I see a Ferrari show up.

Given my skills and abilities, I sincerely doubt I will climb the income ladder that high. I won't say never, but I'm not seeing a plan to make the jump up from the rung I'm on currently. I'm not complaining. I live very comfortably and having more money would really only mean more headaches.
I am just glad that others have the means to buy a Signer and don't mind their cars being drooled over online.

Autocross seems to draw a different crowd than the usual car meet or club. People are there to have a good time, and are very friendly and open. While obviously almost everyone there will want to be fastest and there's some really stiff competition in classes like CS, ST, and SSM, it never seems to get political or ugly. Last year, the CS championship was down to the wire between me and someone else. When I'm there, I hang out with him, he lets me borrow his folding bike to walk the course, and we've both made each other faster. There's no hostility or anything. In fact, I've driven all of the cars he's brought out, and he's driven mine. I really like his engine swapped E30. The fastest guys there will usually offer whatever advice he or she can or answer any questions for the people there who don't know what they're doing, and no one will be shamed for driving slowly or anything as long as they aren't doing anything dangerous. You should check one out if you haven't. Even just hanging out and getting a feel for it could be a good experience for a car nut who doesn't like the crowds at your average meet.
![]() 02/06/2015 at 12:17 |

I think I probably fall into the "rare or interesting vehicle" category. Cadillac has only had one car that it sold for $100K+. That pricepoint was a mistake at the time. Between that, the state of the market/economy, and their curious lack of advertising this gorgeous halo car - it was doomed from the start. And don't get me started on the fighting at GM headquarters over the powerplant! I present to you, Elwood (yes I name my cars), a 2006 Cadillac XLR-V:
I don't believe in owning cars as furniture so Elwood is a highly modified, daily driver (in the summer) that is raced often and hard. Every year I try a different form of racing to experience.
2012 was Land Speed Racing, specifically standing mile where I currently hold records at ECTA (Ohio mile) and the Texas Mile (I had to go back in 2014 to reclaim my half mile record).
2013 was my autocross year where I won the St Louis Region Super Sport Modified Championship.
2014 was for HPDE/Track days where I wrung the car out at tracks like Hallet, Gateway, and Autobahn Country Club.
All the while, I also attend several car shows a year as well as promote the official Cadillac Racing Team. 2011 and 2012, I was a long hauler for the Hot Rod Power Tour.
The car has been shown at the National Corvette Homecoming, and annually at the Corvette FunFest , and Carmel Artomobilia since 2012 as well as several other local shows and meets.

Nice XLR-V. I had such high hopes for the Northstar before they fazed it out. Forged internals in the V's and really nice heads.
It might sound dumb, but have you ever considered replacing the blower with an NA manifold and rigging up a centrifugal blower? I had a chance to look in the engine bay of an XLR and it seemed to have just as much room as a C5 or C6. You would have to rig up your own mount, but the Centri would leave a lot more room for power increases than the roots blower.
![]() 02/06/2015 at 16:29 |
|
I can respect that.
![]() 02/06/2015 at 16:40 |

Wow that is awesome. I've always been quite found of the XLR because it has some characteristics of the fabulous Cien concept. I'm glad you thoroughly enjoy your vehicle unlike most people!
What modifications have you made to Elwood?

It's probably a semi-exotic/rare car. 6,922 were built from MY1990 through MY1995, and 3,032 were from 1990. The 1990 has a look unique to it from the subsequent years, with the front-end and black rub-strip from the '80s C4s. Also unique wheels to that year. The exotic part comes mostly from the engine, which is a Lotus design and the only DOHC engine ever put into a production Corvette.
Is it reliable? Well, it hasn't left me stranded, yet, and I use it as my daily. It has a problem with oil leaking out from the point where the oil cooler lines attach to the block. It's a problem from the factory and most owners have addressed it, but the previous owners of this one didn't and I'll have to get to it when it warms up. For now, I just add a quart of 10W-30 every week to keep it full. It has a maximum capacity of 12 quarts and reads as empty even when a quart down, so there is a lot of margin for safety. I do have to watch the timing chains, because the LT5 is an interference-type motor and if those go, the motor goes. A new LT5 runs around $12,000 and a rebuilt costs about $10,000, so there's good incentive to keep up the maintenance.
As for how much it costs to keep running, I haven't had it for a year yet. I have spent about $91 so far in single-item maintenance, though the oil lines will add $225 to that sum. Items bought were seven copper spark plugs (it had one new one from PO, and it was copper too), a new wiper motor, and an oil filter. Headlight gears will probably need done in the next 20,000 miles, since the right one is out of sync. I'll also have to do something about the slightly crushed floor pan under the passenger's seat, but it's not critical and is barely noticeable. No idea how much that will cost me. There is the recurring cost for oil to account for as well, for the previously mentioned issue. Buying it in $18 5-quart jugs of SuperTech 10W-30, so far it's been about $72. I'm not going to comment on the cost of detailing products because, well, it would be slightly outrageous given how often I detail due to driving it so much. :p
Essentially, most of the stuff I have to do to it is simply because it's 25 years old and worn, or standard car maintenance.
Now, how have I liked it? Best car ever. There was no car I ever wanted more, and now that I have one there still isn't a car I want more. You could drop a Ferrari F40 into my driveway, tell me to sell one or the other, and I'd sell the F40. It has this crude PCM that opens the secondary intake runners (it has 16; 8 prime, 8 seconds) according to a step-function rather than a smooth curve like a modern car would, and the resulting sudden kick in the pants on throttle is amazing, and the F40 would just be duplicating that. Steering is a hair loose, but not enough to matter. It transmits so much feedback through the wheel and the suspension that you know what the car is doing all the time and it responds immediately to user input. This car also makes all the right sounds; it has a smooth rumble as you travel up the rev range and never feels strained. The seats are amazing; they look so old-fashioned, but they hold better and more comfortably than most Recaro seats I've sat in recently. And of course, there are the tiny details I adore: persistent leather smell, orange dash lettering, factory Corvette plaque under the hood, black rub strip, old-school metal seat-belt buckles, third brake light in a pod up top, headlights that do a 180 flip to come up rather than a simple 45 degree motion, etc. I could go on...
Basically, I love it. Would do again, even with the same exact car and all the flaws.

I love that Cadillac made a cousin to the Corvette, and even has relation to the LT5. I think you and I have talked about this at length before, too.
What you didn't mention last time, though, was how much you do with yours! Mad props for that! Can't wait to see Cadillac take another stab at a roadster/sports coupe.

Now that's a long list.... and growing. Motor has 4" intakes, meth injection, 78lb injectors, Steigemeier Stage 5 SnakeBite (port and polish from the air filters to the heads), Steigemeier Venom Cooler tied into ActiveChiller Super Chiller with 2 gallon external tank and hi flow pump, hand-made 1 7/8 primaries on shorty headers, 3" Billy Boat X-Pipe to 3" Billy Boat Fusion exhaust. Street tune on 93 Octane and 50% meth is 520/540 Rwhp/TQ at 16psi boost. Race tune requires 110 Octane and steps up the meth to 100% and 24 psi boost.
The suspension has also been upgraded to C6 ZR1 front sways and springs, C6 Z06 rear sways and springs and Corvette Racing end links and bearings (cause I kept breaking the OEMs). Pilot Sport Cup 285-35 rear 265-40 fronts mounted on OEM C6 Wheels and tires changed from 19" to 18x9 front 18x10 rear.
Aero mods started with the need to get more air across the tranny cooler that I moved up from the wheelwell. Both upper and lower intakes were widened and functional extractor vents incorporated into the fenders and rear hoodline. My 4" carbon fiber lip splitter is resting in my basement until I get all the kinks out of loading the car(in race trim) into the back of my school bus without destroying it. The rear diffuser is still in the design stage with a thin luan mockup confounding my concerns about production and installation issues for the consumer. I'm hoping the rear diffuser will eliminate the need for a rear wing, but I do keep on the lookout for a decent spoiler.
Quite a few cosmetic mods have been done, but most are stealthed except the Elwood emblems on the grill, trunk, hood liner, and wheels.
Little things like Blue LED turn signals embedded into the fender vents; Blue LED DRLs; 55W HID Headlight and Fogs; Chrome mesh & carbon fiber rear license plate frame; oh did I mention a CarPC with FM HD Radio, full-time internet, OBDII data logging, GPS tracking, and so much more .

Yeah, I'm averaging 20-25K miles a year driving to races and shows all year.
