Has there ever been a "REAL" El Camino racecar?

So, I have a 1970 El Camino. I post photos every chance I get.

Kinja'd!!!

See?

It is not a real SS; it is a standard El Camino Custom with a 350 V8 and a 3 speed automatic. I've owned it for over 10 years now, and I love it to death. It's not highly "collectible", but I love it to death and I want to keep it forever. I want to build it into something cool without caring about resale value, but have never been able to decide what to build. Then I came across this awesome !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I would love to make my El Camino into something like this. Have any of you heard of/seen any photos of a "real" El Camino racecar before? I could certainly fake something like this, but it would be cool to have some idea of what a real one would look like.

If any of you help, I'll love you forever. Maybe I'll let you drive it one day.

OMG. I like.

Kind of ugly but I'll blame that on the year. This could be fun.

Not sure if you consider a drift car a race car though.

I do, but not what I'm really looking for. "Vintage Racer" is kind of what is turning me on right now.

I don't even know how to get any front suspension to work for that.

Do you know what it's from specifically? I googled until I found this on a forum, so I don't know what it's from or what team its was for.

No, I just know I'd seen pictures of it before. I'd love to learn more about it though.

I'd guess removing the body and putting it on a truck frame and going from there

It's seeming more and more like I'm going to have to make a "artists" representation of what an El Camino racecar would look like.

I'd go for something inspired by vintage trans-am race cars. 70 Mustang Boss or Camaro RS. Or maybe classic Nascar style.

I'd just make it low and wide. Flare the fenders if you can, and put a square set of good, wide, meaty tires under it.

I know this is a chevelle, but you get the idea.

in terms of true vintage race cars being el caminos, I don't think there were any. Chevelles were really only used in NASCAR untill 1970 then they went to Monte Carlos. Closest thing to being a race car would be like a vintage drag car or a push car for a dragster.

While not exactly a race car, this elky does have a NASCAR style tube frame chassis and was built for Days of Thunder. Its my all time favorite camera car. It was also used on Talladega Nights and for countles NASCAR commercials. In this photo we were using it to shoot running footage on a mountain road for a Dodge commercial.

Classic NASCAR style would be fun. I think you have the right idea.

Block's AWD mustang is actually something I really liked (minus the goofy vinyl wrap) because of the low/wide/fender flares.

A vintange style NASCAR scheme would go pretty well w/ that.

I’ll have to look in my older pictures, because I know I have one of it...

The first HPDE I went to, at BIR (Brainerd International Raceway, in Minnesota) there was an El Camino there. It was also a 1970. Black, with white stripes, and it looked rather wonderful. It was an SS396, and a real one. The story that I heard was, the owner had restored it, and was driving it to car shows every so infrequently, and became bored with that scene. So he looked into how to have fun with the classic that he had restored... and turned it into a track toy. As I remember, it had a custom suspension setup with coil-overs, a digital gauge cluster (Motec? or something similar) and a T56. It definitely wasn’t slow, nor was it a typical El Camino, or typical restomod for that matter.

I couldn’t find too much, but he does have a youtube...

And I have 22 pictures of the El Camino from when I was also at BIR in 2006... I don’t think there’s room for all of them here.

Curious to see if you ended up turning it into a racer or did you leave it as is? I’m sure it goes without saying but you’ve got a beautiful car.

Due to indecision it has remained unchanged. In the process of rolling a 49 Willys into the garage that will be the next project...so this is on the back burner.

You’ve got a fun garage. At least in this case indecision still looks good. Good luck on the Willys.
