What car(s) would make you change your automotive bias?

We all have our own quirks with our cars. Our specific wants and desires out of our vehicles. Some are the engine, some are the transmission, some are as simple as always wanting heated seats, or maybe always having a moonroof.

But what car do you want so badly, that speaks to you so profoundly, that you would change your automotive habits to own it and drive it?

For me, I'd learn how to drive a manual for either the GT350 or the new Ford Focus RS. Those two cars are simply remarkable. I love their looks, I love their sounds, I love the engineering and talent that has gone into making them.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

And I love dat ass on the Mustang.

Sadly I don't really have any habits. I'll drive anything. I used to drive manuals a lot more frequently, but they honestly became a royal PITA in rush hour traffic. And my wife refuses to learn how to drive one.

I have heated seats now, and I really don't need them. I do admit I'm a fan of keyless entry though, but what new car doesn't have that these days?

Not quite what you mean, but I just bought a car which has changed my driving style/habits. A mint-condition 1989 Camry is surprisingly capable when pressing on, but it really doesn't appreciate being hustled. It's much happier just sitting back and cruising, which isn't normally how I drive - but it just instils a sense of quiet unhurriedness.

Habits might be the wrong wording to use. I've corrected the title with "bias."

Basically, what do you usually desire and/or require in a car, but would give up and/or change for a specific vehicle?

Like the other person who posted how he prefers small cars, but would make an exception for a classic S-class. Or the one who prefers JDM vehicles, but would make an exception for the Hellcat.

I'm a GM guy, its what I grew up with and what I know. But I do love that GT350R. Flat plane cranks make me moist.

A few years ago I got to drive a Ferrari 458 - I loves me some 3 pedal driving but if I could afford a 458, I'd do it in a heartbeat. The twin clutch in it was phenomenal... I even loved how it hunted for gears in automatic mode at low speeds - like a thoroughbred in a stable begging to be let loose.

Lastly, on a more realistic note, I loathe SUVs, and aside from one truck I've always owned cars. But I am falling head over heels in LOVE the new Jeep Renegade. I was a Boy Scout and used to camp and hike a lot, and in the last couple years I've been getting back into that, so I'd love to have something a little more adventuresome than my Cruze. Right now I borrow my parents GMC 4x4 crewcab, and I appreciate them letting me use it, but its getting long in the tooth so it may not be a viable option much longer. The Renegade seems like the perfect car to me - it would be a great commuter car, but on the weekends I could throw a tent, fishing pole, and rifle in the back and get out into the wilderness.

I'm against most modern and new cars, but the new Miata, and BRZ make it hard to defend that, especially with some people getting crazy lease deals or getting prior model year ones at discount.

I also have a bias against 4-cylinders under 2.0l, but the Alfa Romeo 4C makes a tough case for highly turbocharged tiny engines.

I have a feeling the upcoming new Z and Alfa Romeo Spider are going to make it even more difficult too.

On the OTHER end of things, I love big muscle sedans, but I have a feeling that living daily with a Charger V6 would break my resolve in how great 'murica is. It would sway my bias AWAY from those cars.

Kinja'd!!!

I have already changed my bias. And I bought an AWD V6 CUV... a used Toyota Venza. I wish mine were this sophisticated blue, but silver doesn't do too bad, and doesn't attract undue traffic fine collector attention.

I used to be much against SUVs and CUVs. I was wrong. They are amazingly versatile and practically capable vehicles, without being as bulky as a truck or truck-based SUV, and far more flexible than any sedan, without paying much of a fuel economy or handling price.

It is no performance car. No bones about that. If I didn't also have a Miata, I would sorely miss the thrill of driving. The V6 is powerful enough to make the vehicle move with confidence, but it isn't a thriller in terms of power or handling, but it doesn't wallow or flounder, either. Generally a comfortable, stable, and quiet cruiser.

But in terms of road-tripping, general household cargo uses, and occasional passengers... it does quite well, and is nicely equipped for a great price.

Venza has the benefit of looking a bit more car-like than most other vehicles in it's class, with the short side windows, and wide track-width. Not overly tall and narrow as some mid-range 5-seat CUVs seem to be.

A MAN-i-van.

I wouldn't even mind a bit of CUV-like ride height, as long as it wasn't too outrageous... and rear-biased AWD would be great.

I don't know why sliding rear doors aren't more popular... aside from most minivans being so boring as to induce numbness even to look at them.

i imagine the sliding mechanism requires a van or wagon or suv like rear section behind the doors. that said... i'm sure some engineer could figure out how to rig a sliding rear door onto a standard 3 box sedan shape.

i actually spent some time with a gentleman who used a wheel chair for a significant portion of his time. he had a custom made bmw 5series GT, with rear doors that swung suicide style, with no B pillar, for ease of ingress/egress. one giant sliding door would probably serve equally well.

Kinja'd!!! BoxerFanatic, troublesome iconoclast. > DrScientist
02/06/2015 at 20:54

Kinja'd!!!0

I was figuring on crossovers. It does preclude wide rear fenders, though.

Minivans trying to look like SUVs hasn't worked well in the past (Chevy Venture...), but I wonder if there is a way to make CUVs/SUVs more practical with sliding doors, or something other than traditional hinged doors for a wider opening, without making the swinging doors too wide to open in a parking space next to other vehicles.

Suicide doors unfortunately form traps in parking spaces, trapping people in the space for the door arcs, the people can't easily get out of that area, and the the doors can't close to allow egress with people standing in the way.
