The bad thing about having a V8.

I drive a 2008 GMC sierra pickup and it's great! Tons of torque and I can carry horse feed! However as a broke college student I wish it got a bit better gas milage because then I could go on trips without having to sell my kidneys. For example, I love doing street photography however the only place I can do it near here is in New Orleans, which is 200 miles away. If we consider that my pickup does 12 mpg on the hwy and the current cost of gas is around $1.90, that works out to gas costing $31.66 cents for one way. Then to go back it's another 200 miles so that's another $31.66. In total, I wold have to spend $63.32 to go there and back in my truck. And if we go back to where gas cost $3.60 a gallon it would be about $120!

I swear there are times I miss owning my civic. At current gas prices that thing could do the entire trip for $20!

Oh hell no! That thing only got about 22mpg and was uncomfortable as hell! I would rather walk a 200 mile trip than ride one in the mini!

streamline it into a hypermiler?

according to betterengineoil.com this cap improved fuel economy by a whole 4%

That's horrible, even with the comically cheap gas you guys have in the US, especially nowadays. Why would you have such a vehicle as a broke college student?

Because I got it for free.

*the bad thing about having a large, inefficient V8 in a heavy vehicle and a lead foot.

Theoretically you'd get better gas mileage out of a V8 than an I4 for the same displacement, but a 2.0l V8 that isn't just a destroked 3.0l or so is going to be rather fragile.

How is your mileage so poor? My Silverado gets around 17 on the highway/city.

12 seems really low for an 08. 5.3 or 6.2?

12mpg isn't as awful as a 20 year old Ford small block that gets about 8-10 on the highway depending on if it's towing a trailer or not.

When it was my dad's he put on bigger wheels changed in offroad gears. amazing what that'll do to destroy fuel economy.

5.3 with bigger wheels and off road gear ratio.

On the plus side, you're not in my situation: I only get about the same mileage out of a 3.o Ranger! At least you can expect low mileage out of a bigger truck.

K-Roll gets like 22 in his FoST too...I don't get it. I've been in too much traffic lately to really get an idea of my new average, but before the motor went, I was getting 20avg in the HEMIWagon, and I get 18 average in the SL600. I have no idea how you guys drive your pint sized 4 bangers, but you should be getting way better mileage than my V8 and V12, because those things are beasts...

What's your FiST get?

29? I was getting that in my Neon like clockwork...for the size of the motor and the weight of the FiST, I don't think that's too bad... but I think you could get into the 30's without much trouble if you tried.

Does the 2008 Sierra have cylinder deactivation? I'm assuming it's either the 5.3 or 6.2l v8.

Solution: sell GMC, buy cheap Jeep Comanche. The Jeep won't get all that much better MPG than the GMC, but you can still haul horse feed in it, and you can turn the rest of the money you get from selling the GMC into fuel.
