The body on it was absolutely gobsmacking, not even a hint of rust or dings, paint looked great as well. It was fully driveable when I went to look at it, but I ended up walking away because the car didn't have its original engine. Somebody swapped the original fuel injected 2.3 for a lesser carburated 2 litre. I kinda regret not taking the plunge, because it wasn't expensive at all. I think it ended up going for $540.

Mileage? And was the original engine a diesel?

Back when I went to look at it it was priced at around $700. The owners ended up dropping because there was pretty much no interest in the car and they didn't advertise it online.

Honestly? Right now I would have bought it, but back then (mid 2009) I was looking to buy my first car (by that I mean a DD) and I was worried that spending money on that W123 would cut into my already limited budget. There was also the issue with the engine. I couldn't register that car as a vintage automobile unless I managed to find a 2.3 engine to put into it, and that as you'd imagine wouldn't be so easy.

That said these days I would drive it as it is. I probably would change the 230E badge to 200 though. I definitely regret not buying it. The car was very loved by its previous owner as well, he'd drive it religiously once a week and then wash it with rainwater he collected for that reason. Then he'd wipe it dry and park it in the garage under sheets and blankets.

It ended up being sold to a farm and in all likelihood used as farming equipment. No happy end here.

The original engine was a petrol 2.3. As for the displayed mileage:

Then probably not a taxi in a former incarnation. Are you in Canada?

Nope, I'm in continental Europe.

The car was in one family since new. Originally bought in Germany by the brother of the last owner who had it since the late 80's.

That explains why they had a choice of that engine and that transmission - here in US America we had the 240D (auto and 4 speed) and 300D (auto only). For a while, we had a 2.8 petrol engine (auto only) which was, of course, fuel injected.
