I’m still really angry about this missed opportunity. The reason Top Gear US got a terrible first impression and will consequently never live up to the original is the cast. No, on an individual level, there’s really nothing wrong with them. It’s the way they immediately tried to mimic the chemistry of their British counterparts that ruined them. Very few people knew more than one of these guys, so the whole three-best-friends-who-playfully-pick-on-each-other thing was just... awkward.
But the thing is.... there was a great trio of American TV presenters out there already. Their show was failing, and (although nobody knew it at the time) they were all going to be dropped from it not long after TGUS’s debut. They had an established chemistry and could easily fill the shoes of the British hosts in that sense, and - more importantly - they all had a very well-established technological background, so they were really perfect for the job. I’m talking about these guys:
And now it’s too late. They would have been perfect, and it’s a shame that they never got the chance.

I agree that the scripted playfulness was pretty painful, however I know MANY people who can’t stand these three [above] and their scripted silliness. I like them but I don’t think they would be any better in a car show than the current cast. The trouble with the current cast is that WE never gave them the chance to define their own characters, we expected the show to be TG UK only with American accents, which was just silly.

You just want Kari’s sweet... face on TV again. Not that I blame you.

I miss these guys as well. Perfect excuse to post the Mythsters:

Honestly, I never cared too much for her. Grant was awesome, though.

You’re bloody right you know. Here’s hoping David, Chris, Sabine and Chris work well together. They have a pretty stellar line up for car fans everywhere, let’s hope the mainstream junps onboard too as I want more car shows that aren’t a bunch of dudes in black T shirts selling muscle cars.

I swear she's even better looking now than she was 10 years ago.

I haven’t watched Mythbusters in a while, didn’t realize that they got rid of those three (and that they show will end next season). Assuming they had car knowledge, it could have totally worked.
Although I do like Top Gear US. Speaking of, what's the deal with that? Is it just not coming back?

They tracked Miatas multiple times that has to count for something.

while these guys have great chemistry together they lack the driving skill which is a prerequisite for a car show

I honestly have the hugest crush on Kari. A pretty woman with actual brains is a massive (MASSIVE!) turn on.

I bet you compared the American Office to the UK Office as well, right?
The simple solution is if you don’t like the show, don’t watch it.

I am fairly certain TGUSA (Fuck yeah!) will be back for a 5th season. I have enjoyed the show on its own merits, but I wish History would cut the incessant review of what has happened after each commercial break.
I realize that the average ‘Murican is pretty dumb, but we’re not so stupid that we can’t remember what happened before the people tried to sell us more shit.
Like, seriously, me no what happen before me see gud thing-tellings on color-watching0-box.

I agree with what you’re saying but I think the repetitiveness of TGUS really hurt it too. You’re right, though, that if the right hosts with the right chemistry were there then that wouldn’t have been such a large issue. I might replace Kari with Jesse Combs just to get more car knowledge in there.

I’ve always loved me some Kari!

Go find the the very well done Dinner with Drivers podcast that features Tanner and Rutledge. They talk about the chemistry issues in the first season and why they broke from th UK’s format. I'm actually happy with what they are putting out.
All the other podcasts n the series are good as well. Tom Kendall and Bob Varsha were very interesting.
Also, would hoon. She is a month younger than I am

While I agree those 3 did work together amazingly on “that” show, I don’t think they can just slot 3 people in a car show. I don’t recall those 3 saying they had any extensive car experience.
