This week and next week, there are no classes at the tech school where I work. I’m a salaried manager, and the only reason we’re open at all is so hourly workers can get hours. The two hourly people who could’ve worked today aren’t here. What am I still doing here?

I was only really planning to be here for a few hours today, like 10:30 am - 3 pm, to make a half-assed attempt of looking like we did some work. It was just supposed to be me and the library coordinator girl, because the financial aid lady already told me last week she was planning on being “sick” today.

As a good, responsible managerial overlord, am totally fine with people being “sick” when they are not actually sick, because we all have sick hours that we have to use up by the end of the year.

So I got to work at 10:30, opened the place up, brewed a pot of coffee, and waited for the library girl to arrive. Except she just called and said she’s actually sick, not “sick.” Her main reason for coming in today was to help 3 particularly fragile students with their homework, but she doesn’t want to get them sick. So now I have to call them and tell them not to come in today because library girl’s not here.

Other work things that have happened today include:

I ate a granola bar and am working on the first cup of coffee from the pot I brewed.

The vending machine filler-upper guy stopped by to ask if we needed to have him come around with no students being here for a couple weeks. I told him no. He took a few expired cookies and cinnamon rolls out of the vending machine that apparently the vending machine company gives away to a homeless shelter. So that’s good.

I talked with one lady from some company that wants to hire people.

I caught up on my car blog reading.

One of the 3 fragile students actually called shortly after library girl did, so that’s 1 less call I need to make. I’m going to call the other 2 now.

How long should I sit around here by myself? Maybe I should check in with my boss over at the Milwaukee campus to give her a heads up that I’m the only person here and since I’m salary I don’t need to be here?

UPDATE: Dangit, the most fragile of the 3 fragile students showed up! She didn’t answer when I called her, and didn’t get the voicemail I left her, so she’s here, in the computer lab doing homework. I talked with the other 2 who aren’t coming in today, so I guess I’m stuck here until she leaves.

Sounds like you should help the other 2 with their homework....

Or convince them to help one another with their homework, so it’ll be the blind leading the blind.

I worked as a Resident Advisor for several years when I was in college. One year, I volunteered for the Christmas Break shift. Someone had to stay on campus to be available for foreign students who weren’t going home and didn’t have local friends to stay with over the break. This worked out well for me since I had a two-day-a-week “day” job that I could ramp up to full time and make some extra cash for the holidays. Every evening, I had to walk rounds and make sure everything was ok.

I think there were four or five students on campus that year. I knew they were still around since their tvs and lights would go on/off or change channels between rounds. But for all the time I spent on campus, I saw exactly two students in the hallways during that break, each one time.

My mom took pity on me and came to visit for Christmas Eve and we went to my Aunt’s for Christmas dinner. Other than that, the only human contact I had during that month was with the people at work.

Weirdest Christmas Break Ever.

I’d say just make sure everything is in order and peace out early for the day. Leave a note with contact info if people for some reason need you.

Ah, end of the year fun times. I am the only one here and will be for all but one day until the end of the year. That day is inventory day so I don’t really need to do anything that day either.

Between now and next Wednesday at 7:00 AM the only thing I need to do is print out the EOY Inventory worksheets.

Between now and this Wednesday I need to assemble my wife’s Christmas gift and figure out the logistics of getting a 150 pound desk sized object from work and into my house. Mostly I need to figure out how to get it from the driveway through the stupidly small split level entry and up the steps to the living room. I’m pretty sure I can get it into the back of my truck with the forklift here at work.

I should probably clean up my desk a little, but surfing Oppo seems like more fun.

As a good, responsible managerial overlord, am totally fine with people being “sick” when they are not actually sick, because we all have sick hours that we have to use up by the end of the year.

[RANT=”Don’t take this personally, but...”] As a Human Resources professional, I can tell you that this view of sick time is very damaging, and I have fired people for using sick time as extra PTO. It is one of my biggest peeves in the world.

If it was meant to be used as extra vacation days it would not have been classified as sick time. You are not ‘entitled’ to those hours just because you didn’t get sick in the year. This misuse of sick leave is precisely why many companies simply don’t offer it as a benefit any more. Too many people game the system and it costs the employer a shit ton of money. Then, when they cut the program, people who are actually legitimately sick either have to go unpaid, or have to use their vacation time.

It’s fraudulent, irresponsible, self-entitled, bullshit like this that ruins it for everybody.[/RANT]

Sorry, again, nothing against you personally - I’ve just seen benefits programs get hacked away because of blatant misuse, and it is tragic.

I also have an HR background and now work in educational career services.

The reason I have no problem with this is because my company’s benefits, to put it mildly, are shit. They are designed to short-change employees at every opportunity.

For example, PTO and sick time are kept separate not because there is a generous amount of PTO and sick time, but so the company can limit the total number of hours that employees accrue, and carry over year-to-year. At the end of the year, all unused sick time, and any unused PTO over 40 hours, is forfeited by the employee.

The only health plan option available is a high-deductible/HSA plan that still costs a good amount of money per month even after the discounts for signing a non-tobacco-user declaration and getting a biometric screening.

I have a coworker who is out on “maternity leave,” and the reason I have quotes around that is because the company’s “maternity leave” consists of taking unpaid FMLA leave and filing a short-term disability claim for 60% of salary.

I understand that this is to save the company money, but these are just a small number of the many, many ways that there are lots of anti-employee tweaks to the benefits program.

If the company’s benefits were a little less shitty, I’d be more interested in being a good steward of those benefits.
