I read “reverse flow” and began squinting to see if that was an LT1 in the lead shot and then let out an “Oh shit!” when I realized what you meant. So. Fucking. Cool.

I am having a crisis. And an idea. Reverse flow SHO V6?

What goes into making an engine “reverse flow” is it just cams and custom manifolds? Are the heads redone? (I figure, yes.) And other than looking cool and probably sounding better, are there performance advantages?

no terrible opti spark there thank goodness. almost looks like an ford flat head distributor cap

Some engines have abysmal flow on one port, and turbo diesel Vs are often reverse with the turbos tucked ontop, eg powerstroke.

I think this is a ford flathead. I saw a head similar to this when I was the NHRA museum.

Mm. True enough. How about a reverse flow Ford 302 in a 1977 Mercury Capri?

Normally the intake valves are on the inside (within the V) and the exhaust valves are on the outside (think where exhaust headers go). Reverse flow has the intake on the outside (the short trumpets on the 1st and 3rd picture), and dumps the exhaust in the middle.

I don’t know why you’d do this for a NA engine, but if you put some turbos in the valley you get nice packaging and a short exhaust path, plus your manifolds can link cylinders on opposite banks for an ideal pulse sequence into twin scroll turbos.

All you have to do is cross the equator, and then the crank spins the opposite direction. You get a little resistance pulling in air from behind the car, but without a throttle you get huge efficiency gains. The short exhaust run to your air filter is also a plus, and your gas pedal acts as an air brake.

Every time I see how much plumbing if under the hood of a Powerstroke, I think engineers at Ford need to be shot. A ‘between the vee’ turbo with a liquid intercooler should have about 10 feet of turbo plumbing. That stupid truck had 800.
