First of these cars/engines to start this trend ( to my knowledge anyways ), is the Cadillac CT6. It was announced it would come with an optional 3.0L Twin-Turbo V6 and have a peak output of ~400HP.
Next to arrive, is the recently revealed refresh of the Lincoln MKZ. It’s slated to come with a performance trim, equipped with a 3.0L Twin-Turbo V6 making ~400HP.
And last, but certainly not least, we have the also refreshed Infiniti Q50 (and the Q60 coupe as well). It’s announced it will have a couple new engine choices, but one of them just happens to be - you guessed it - a 3.0L Twin-Turbo V6 making ~400HP.

My CTS V-Sport has a twin turbo V6 making 420.

~400hp 6 cylinder turbo...

It’s also a 3.6L.

Is it a 3.0L DOHC?

V6s aren’t new, Turbos aren’t new, 400hp isn’t new. 3.0 Twin Turbo V6s aren’t new.
^I felt the need for a third car for some reason, plus it is still a 3.0 Twin Turbo Six cylinder.
Nope, don’t see it. Just the usual turbo-all-the-things-ing car manfacturers have been doing for years. A similar thing happened not that long ago with a couple more cylinders, a wee bit moar pwr and a little more variation in bodystyle:

CAFE regulations will do that. And this is only the first iteration of these engines, the next will be more powerful. As much as I love a good V8, this is fine with me.

It has four valves per cylinder?

Lol, I had twin turbo before it was cool.

Yes it is. But it does illustrate your point.

In less than a year, three completely different companies announced new engines for new (or “new-ish”) vehicles that are all 3.0L, that are all V6, that are all Twin-Turbo and are all pushing 400HP at the crank according to their press releases (the torque output differs between them).
Saying that V6 engines, turbo charging, 3.0L engines and having engines making 400HP is nothing new is just a technically true, but otherwise completely worthless comment when I’m pointing out that it’s the specific combination of all of those attributes being publicly revealed in such a short amount of time as a funny trend.

Yes actually, but it’s OHV.

Stoichiometry. Smaller engine = less emissions at the extremely narrow RPM band they test it at.

And approximately 3+3+0.3+0.3L

OHV engines are especially well suited to high RPMs, according to internet engine gurus running LS engines with 4.8 crankshafts.

But 6500rpm is high as fuck bro!

300ZX before it was cool. Well before. Well before the Supra, FD RX-7, 3000GT. It doesn’t get enough credit. At the time it was truly ground-breaking. Yes, the competition that came later might’ve been faster - of course it would be. It all started with the 300ZX in ‘89.

I’d say this is a good trend. I’m all for it if the turbos hold up over time. Not if they get shit fuel economy. Might as well stick with a V8 if that’s the case.
