A while back I made a post saying !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . I got my truck back yesterday. Two new turbos and a new timing chain. Since it is all covered by warranty I didn’t even see a bill. Anybody with the knowledge care to give me a ballpark estimate of what it cost Ford to fix my F-150 3.5 Ecoboost? Also is there anything I should do as far as break in procedures for a new timing chain and new turbos? Check out that shiny new turbo buried under the boost controller and cooling, oil and intake lines.
Now that the truck is back and I’ve had a chance to drive it a little bit I can say it is noticeably quieter than it has ever been. The turbos make less whooshy noises than they ever did. The new timing chain seems to have also reduced the noise. You can still hear injector noise when you are standing outside and it is running, but overall it is definitely quieter than it was even when brand new.
Mine was the first EB sold at the local dealer and was one of the first builds. It was delivered in March of 2011. Since then there have been a couple part number changes to the turbos, and I suspect changes to the timing chain. The service manager said there was a TSB for the timing chain on the early builds. Talking to him he said that they have had to replace a couple of turbos and maybe one other timing chain. For as many F-150 EB’s as they sell he said they don’t see too many of them getting work done. That is encouraging, but I’m still going to talk to them about the extended powertrain warranty.

I can’t even imagine how much that would have cost out of warranty. I mean basically this this would have been a loss in another 5 years and out of warranty.

Warranty expires in March, so I’ve only got a few months to either trade it (not gonna happen) or spring for the extended warranty. My total wild guess is in the $5-6k range. I’m figuring around $2k/turbo and another $1k for the timing chain.

Yeah, Subaru gave me a $2500 quote for one turbo, so those plus the timing chain puts you in the 5-7k range easily.

well I can tell you that when my fuel system exploded on my tdi it was quoted at nearly 10 grand...and that was without new injectors or a turbo or anything. it adds up.

yup, 10 grand in parts and labor. granted its basically replacing the ENTIRE fuel system minus the tank and injectors but still. Good thing to have a warranty.

Guessing based on others I’ve seen...
Timing chain ~800 (~200 in parts, 5 hours)
Turbos ~2600 (parts ~700 *2 , single turbos quote 5-7 hours...so go with 10 for 2?)
Plus diagnostic, misc materials and hours and it’d probably be a 4-5k. Might be lower but I doubt it'd be much higher than 5k.

That’s freaking insane. I think if I was presented a $10k repair bill on a car that was worth anything less than, say $12k, I’d just light it on fire and walk away.
OK, I’m not nearly enough of a bad-ass to actually do that, but I’d want to.

Remember, don’t look back when you’re walking away. And for maximum badassery make sure you’re walking away with Salma Hayek.
