I need an idea for a Christmas gift for my 10-year-old boys. Video games are covered already. I need something that they can DO on Christmas Day. A game, a manipulative toy. No drones, please.

RC car. Seriously, my favorite presents were rc cars, check the local classifieds and you will find some great package deals out there or go new. My suggestion would be to get them each the same one, and make them the slower but uber strong types. The hours of racing and crashing will be numerous.

How about an electronic set, like The Elenco Snap Circuits Pro? That’ll keep them busy while you run to starbucks on Xmas morning at 6am + will teach them how to help daddy fix electric issues in car.
(or a Lego Robotics if the guys are really smart?)

Anything requiring that they actually assemble it

Tried that a couple of years ago. No good. They’re heavily into video games, and I’m trying to find something outside of that. We’re covered on Lego, too.

RC drift car.
Or those little build-a-track things with the little cars that go down the slope.

Dad: Son, Santa brought you a 2016 MX-5 and Santa said I have to keep it for you ready until you get your Driver’s License!
Son: Whatevs, old man. I won’t even have to learn how to drive in 8 years.

Lego, or as Hammerhead said, RC cars.

Why not some simple Lego sets? The smaller sets don’t take long to build, can be done in a small space, and can be easily enjoyed.

Since the comment nesting is acting up for me and I can’t respond to you in your reply to me, there are a *lot* of lesser known board games out there which are fun. Sadly, some are probably too complicated to hold the attention of ten year olds. The two I listed are “noisy” enough to amuse the young and strategic enough to keep playing for a long time to come, but if they don’t work, may I suggest watching Wil Wheaton’s Tabletop for suggestions?

Option 1: Lego. Always Lego.
Option 2: Settlers of Catan. (It’s time to introduce them to the harsh realities of competitive economic life, and there’s not many better gateways. Bonus: Guaranteed fighting. Dinner and a show!)
Option 2b: Red Ryder BB Gun.

Legos, R/C cars, or Transformers. That’s all I wanted when I was 10. Also, those rubber band powered balsa wood airplanes make awesome stocking-stuffers.

If you can find them, erector sets. They’re pretty rad and are kind of like more advanced legos.

Lego’s appears to be covered and RC Car...
Do they do models? Would they?
Give them the board game Risk. If you get them to sit down and play it, they’ll be sitting there for hours.

If they like card games, Mille Bornes is a great car related card game.

If you can swing the price, go with Lego Mindstorms. They get to build with Lego AND use computers for programming. The programming system is easy - drag and drop for the most part. This will give them a leg up for First Lego League !

Didn't see it elsewhere, but I'm a big proponent of CCGs.
Magic cards, or really any other Collectible Card Game, but Magic is the only one with decades plus staying power. Deck building adds a unique depth of strategy that traditional board games don’t match. If you just want them to be able to play immediately, preconstructed (there are dual deck packs) decks are the way to go. Throw in a starter deck or two (or boosters, but they'll be short on lands if you go that way) and they can start to learn the pitfalls of deck construction.

One of my boys is in a Lego robotics class at school. I thought about this, but it’s $350, and a bit too many dollars in one pot.

I have Milles Bornes, and I used to play it when I was there age. When my wife and I went to Paris 20 years ago, I searched out a French language version in a toy shop. It has all the original card designs that I remembered. I need to get it out. We’re going to take all of our board games out over the break and see if we can play more of them.
