Ladies and Gentlemen, I have an idea.

I can’t be alone concluding the vast majority of drivers on our public roads don’t have the first clue about the rules that govern this activity. I say we, as enthusiasts and hopefully as conscientious, situationally aware, in-control-of-our-vehicles types, take it upon ourselves to bring awareness to this fact.

Beginning in January, let’s all collectively make bi-weekly posts in our social media feeds explaining the basic rules of motor vehicle operation. We’ll need a topic list of issues explained with reliable and accurate information, and a hashtag.

For example, no one int he State of Texas has the first clue how a 4-way stop works. I polled some coworkers, who at my place of employment are all highly educated, intelligent professionals whoa re very good at what they do. The most common wrong answer? I have no idea, I just wave everyone else through until I’m the last car. The second most common wrong answer? If you’re going straight, you get to go first; turning cars have to go last.

Kinja'd!!!

This is moronic, and not limited to four-way stops. Merging. Right on red. Pedestrian right of way. Lane hogging. People don’t know how to drive. So let’s do something about it, in our own limited way. Because seriously, I’m just going to never drive again if I have to continue dealing with these mouth breathers.

“If you’re going straight, you get to go first; turning cars have to go last.” What the fuck is this shit?? The waving stuff, I sorta get. Sometimes its hard to figure out who got there first and someone needs to wave the other guy through. But the guy going straight? Nobody uses turn signals so that would end rather badly all the time. Shit, no wonder every 4-way gets turned into a damn traffic light. People are too stupid to handle it.

I think this is a pretty great idea. I don’t have a facebook or anything, but since I am a claims adjuster I can add here what duties are owed by drivers if you would like.

They’re all going straight, they all have the right of way.

On another note, you cannot fix stupid. You can only really make it near impossible for stupid to matter. Make everything a traffic light with no right turns on red. No left turns, jug handles (a jersey thing) everywhere. You have to idiot proof the system. Sure roundabouts (traffic circles) are the most efficient way to handle an intersection but it does not work in the real world because people are too thick to handle it. Lol rant over.

good idea! unfortunately, i have no social media feeds. my topics however:

1. four way stops as you mentioned

2. proper use of lanes on highways/freeways is my biggest pet peeve. you can get to this one by making sure everyone knows what the lanes are called. ie traveling lane vs passing lane. makes a lot more sense to not be travelling in the passing lane.

3. high beams. distance within which to turn them off. (i’m particularly annoyed at this because my cars are fairly low)

I always broke the 4-way stop to two rules:

1) First one to stop is first to go.

2) If two or more come to a stop at the same time, the driver to the right goes first (i.e. if cars A, B, and C all stopped at the same time in this diagram, C should go first)

As far as I know these are the rules in Ontario, and this is assuming no pedestrians since they pretty much always have right of way.

oh yeah... need to be careful about state and city-specific regs. eg, pedestrians can take right of way in MA, and absolutely no rights on red in new york city.

Understanding right-of-way is important, and I too see a bunch of driver who don’t seem to understand.

In Michigan, four-way stops are simple. First vehicle to stop = first vehicle to go. In fact, most if not all areas operate this way. But what I have trouble remembering, is how does it work when two vehicles stop at the same time?

When 2 vehicles enter an intersection from different highways at approximately the same time, the driver of the vehicle on the left shall yield the right of way to the vehicle on the right.

I’ve had to look this up several times because I keep getting it mixed up. Part of my reason for even posting it here is to help myself remember. But there’s still an unanswered question that the MCL does not address: What if the other stopped car is across the intersection from me, and one or both of us are signaling for a turn that cannot be executed at the same time?

In that case, I either wave them through, or if I already see them waving, GO NOW and stop hesitating. Because everyone loses when both parties hesitate.

Indiana is equally useless at four way stops. Equally popular here is what we call Amber Rush. If you go through a stop light and think “crap that was close; maybe I should have stopped.” I can guarantee there will be at least two cars that followed you through on Red.

They also have a ever growing number of traffic circles being installed. If people can’t understand a four way stop, a circle doesn’t help them. Hashtag should be #HowToFuckingDrive

That’s how it was taught to me.

Chairman Kaga is right about Texass drivers, tho:

1. If’n thar be a car int the innersection already, check yer Facebuk fer updates.

2. If’n thar ain’t be a car int the innersection, well then, i tell you hwat boy, you best be gettin on thru.

3. Flashy lights like blinkers on other cars is a distraction to safe motor vee-hickle operatin; best is jus tuh ignore ‘em. They’s just tryna distract you so’s they cin go first.

4. Trucks always go first buhfore cars. That’s jus the hway it is. If’n two trucks come to an innersection at the same tahm, then the truck with the biggest lift goes first.

I’m assuming you mean a case where one vehicle is turning right and the other is turning left. If both are turning the left or both turning right there will be no issue. The vehicle going right goes first, as it would be the same as if he was going straight. The vehicle turning left always yields right of way to the car on the opposite side unless that car is also turning left, then they can go at the same time.

Come to think of it, you’re right. Not only is that a much better method, it’s how basic right-of-way works for an uncontrolled intersection. I guess MVC does cover such a situation after all. Thanks for the reminder!

Missing Rules 3, and the sacred rule 4.

3) If two cars stop at the same time, and are opposite each other, then the car travelling straight has the right of way. If one car is turning left, it must wait for the other car to be clear of the intersection.

And the great, unknown Rule 4:

4) The most aggressive goes first. This generally only applied to a situation where everyone is sitting waiting for everyone else to go, because Canada politeness. Observe the following:

Car 1:After you, I was clearly here 0.002 of a second later.
Car 2:I couldn’t possibly, after you.
Car 3:By all means, I wouldn’t think of it, after you my good sir.
Car 4: No no no, I shouldn’t think of myself to be so brazen. I would insult your honor by going first. I will wait here.

Fun fact, they don’t teach 4, but I end up seeing it regularly in rural Canada. I even saw it once in North Dakota.

(Side note, this does not happen inside the GTA, Quebec, Vancouver, or Ottawa.)

I never really thought about 3) consciously while driving but that definitely makes sense.

Rule 4 is something I put into practice myself. If no one’s going to decide to go then I’ll just get moving. It does happen in Ottawa often enough and it’s one of those situations where being too polite on the road is actually more annoying to others (kind of like when someone stops traffic just to let in another car who has been waiting to turn which is also very annoying when done at an incorrect time).

Ottawa's biggest trouble, by far, is merging and the yield sign. I don't think people understand what it means.
