Kinja'd!!!

About 9 months after I drove through a flooded section of the freeway, my horn has croaked. It sounded a little weak for a spell, something I attributed to the water ingestion. It returned to normal a few months later, or close to normal, and so I didn’t worry about it. It even worked this afternoon, but then stopped.

I accustomed to hitting the lock button on the key and getting a little chirp, but this evening that stopped happening. I checked under the hood and can hear the relay clicking at the appropriate time, so most of the circuit still works. I guess I have to dig around and find out if anything became disconnected.

Now how am I supposed to signal to all of those idiots that they’re driving like complete morons?

Or better yet, change it to one of your favorite musical tunes. Sandstorm ought to get them out of the way.

A small amount of water will disable a horn. Try taking it out of the vehicle and blowing it out with air. I know most horns are just a diaphragm that vibrates against some metal or whatever.

Years ago, back in the early ‘80s, we did that to a friend’s Dodge Colt (or was it a Plymouth Champ - same thing). It took a little while to figure out the wiring since horn wiring is/was done a little differently than other circuits on a car (something about the switch being on the negative side of the circuit from what I remember from my technician training). It was a hilarious upgrade and scared the hell out of a lot of people.

When I saw that Top Gear episode where Jezza buys a Mercedes 600 Grosser, all I could think when he sounded the horn was “ been there, done that... ”

It was 9 months ago, so chances are that any trapped water has either evaporated or rusted the guts solid. Perhaps I can soak it in WD40 and see if that does anything.
