I just talked to the local Ford dealer. Turns out they have to replace both of my turbo’s. Good thing I’m still covered by the powertrain warranty.

One on each arm since it’s a twin turbo.

2011 F-150. I’ve got a few months left on the powertrain warranty, but will definitely be examining the extended warranty option for the powertrain.

Guy at my office just had his in for service today, some kind of leak involving oil and the turbo. I know nothing else. He’s pissed.

This isn’t the first I’ve heard of this on these early EB motors. Turbos are great and all, but this kind of stuff still makes me nervous about buying another turbo car.

Sounds like his is out of warranty? I can’t get too upset for stuff that is covered by warranty. It is definitely a concern as far as longevity goes, the truck has <40k on it. Hopefully the replacement turbos have been improved and it isn’t a systemic problem that causes them to fail. My plan is to look at the extended warranty for powertrain, see what kind of coverage that gives and then hopefully trade it in around the time it doesn’t have any warranty left.

You know, I’m really tempted by the torque curve to get an EB F-150 for my next truck. However, I keep my trucks a looooooong time (10 years in on my current truck, with no end in sight). I have to wonder when I’m 10 years and 100k into it and my GM LS motor needs nothing but plugs and wires, will these need new turbos? There’s something to be said about the relative simplicity of a small block Chevy.

I was on my way out of town for Thanksgiving and the CEL came on. I pulled over and debated going for it or turning around and heading home. I settled on turning around and getting the code read before I decided. On the way to the nearest AutoZone I pulled out to pass and was missing about 100-150 horsepower and it sounded like one of the turbos was making bad noises. Kind of like the Group B squirrel blender sound but more strangled. At that point I decided to head home and repack everything into my wife’s Escape.

Another opponaught JUST posted something earlier to day about his Powerstroke diesel being gummed up with sand from the factory etc etc.

Ford + Turbos = iffy maybe?

I hope not, I’m loving their options and plan on buying alot of pre-owned vehicles of these current models out.

But first, lemme buy a Raptor.

Yeah, and this is one of the earliest. It is definitely the first that was sold at the local dealer, and from one of the first production runs. Hopefully it is just a turbo thing and nothing to do with the supporting systems. And hopefully if it is a turbo issue they have updated turbos to install.

The torque curve is awesome and it is a great motor as far as performance goes. I love the torque for towing, we have a ~7,000 lb camper that is no problem. Unloaded I’ve seen almost 22 mpg highway on a long trip. The long term does have me concerned after this, but this is one of the first builds. I don’t know if it is literally the first batch, but it is the first EB sold at the local dealer and they had to order it for me to even get one to test drive.

Yeah, it cost an hour and a half, but that was better than the risk of getting stuck somewhere in the middle of nowhere.

That’s good to know. I’ve still got several years before it’s new truck time, so I imagine the durability will be a fairly well known factor by then.

That stinks. Other than this I’ve had to replace the front door speakers and wire harnesses, but that was in the first year or so and had been the only problems to date.

I don’t know much about turbos, but had yours decided to completely disintegrate internally, is there a possibility that debris could get sucked into the intake/head/combustion chamber and totally grenade the engine?

Lol, that’s what u get for no getting a v8.

Jk, I’d personally get a V8 just because. Gave me a flashback to 2.7t Audi turbos. Like the two in my A6.
