...thats a lot of miles.

found on the forums:

the Diesels are flawed by constant fuel leaks, the O-rings have to be replaced every 10,000 miles... around 1,000 dollars each time. The diesels also have a weak Air intake system which causes the MAF to go bad every 20k miles

So check fuel system and intake

Be warned: This car will likely end up solidifying your hatred of German cars. I like them, but they have a reputation for basically being one of the cars where Merc stopped building them to last forever and started building them to last until the end of the lease. They have since gotten better, but just be careful.

Rust. And rust. Did I mention rust? Seriously, this is probably the worst Benz of the worst era of MB. Almost all mid 90s to early 00 Benzes I see have rust spots.

Well, for one it’s not a Cadillac so I don’t think you’d like it too much, lol

Well, the wheel can pop off randomly (front left), it has a unbelievable chance of coughing up a piston, and can also run on natural gas and cocaine.

(Don’t take this post seriously. It’s just a joke.)

Fuel leaks, rusty front spring perches that can cause suspension collapse, and the fun one: failure of the heater mixing valve causing it to blow hot all the time. Occasional trans-go-bye-bye, and harder than some Benzos to change the timing chain - not horrible, though. I didn’t have one, but I know someone who did. Also best off if the EGR system is trifled with, but I Wouldn’t Know Anything About That.

Fuel leaks, yes, but I don’t recall my friend’s having anything like those O-rings as a problem as such. Not aware of him having had any issues with the MAF, either, though that may be related to troubles with the EGR some people have.

yea, i thought tht was a little fishy as well. not freaking way would it be every 10K miles, MB owners woudl have had a lawsuit against them

As others have already pointed out, these come from a really dark era for MB. They started cost cutting without really having any experience at that. Other manufacturers have always built cars to a price. MB built cars to last. So reliability went down the toilet. Very cheap parts that fail almost randomly and can take other parts with them. They also switched to water based paint around that time, and didn’t have mastered that either yet. So they tend to get very crispy. All in all, if you want an MB, get one gen older or one newer.

Built to a price point, not to a standard like the W124 and earlier...

It’s not the best to ever come from Mercedes. I drove an E320 years back when I was first shopping for a car. They tend to get pretty creaky with age...you know that feeling when everything seems a little too stiff to the point of being brittle? That car has made it to 220,000 miles for the same reason that interior looks the same as it did at 20,000 miles, the owner was a fastidious, anal retentive, pharmaceuticals representative. That engine has probably never done more than 2000 RPM and it’s spent it’s life doing 70 in the middle lane on the interstate 90% of the time.

If I may, what exactly has gone wrong with your DeVille? From the shot of the C-Pillar with that Talisman emblem on the landau roof (Harking back to the 1974-76 Fleetwood Talisman trim, that’s class) it looks like a beauty. I’d buy it myself if I wasn’t busy bankrupting my poor college ass on my S600.

I don’t know much about the diesels, they’re quite rare, but those who own them love them from what I’ve seen. I’m on my second has 210, most Benz techs own or have owned them. Gas ones are excellent. The one I’m on right now has only ever needed bushings, ball joints, and sway bar end links, at 190k. 2000-2002 are super reliable, as they fixed a ton of issues during production. Be wary of earlier ones, especially without excellent service history. That being said, the one Cadillac (‘01 Seville) I’ve ever owned cost me way more in maintenance and repairs than both of my 210’s combined.

I think a lot of the internet is wearing rose colored glasses when it comes to 124’s and the 210 gets a lot of undeserved hate because of it. I’ve seen a ton of problems that are a royal pain on 124’s and the only one I have any interest in owning is a 500e but even those have their issues. And don’t even think about an early 211. 210’s are not without their issues, but they are rarely large or difficult to figure out.
