I think the name of the game is gonna have to be “weird.”
I’ve been doing some thinking, as I’m sure all of you have as well, about what Doug’s next car should be. He’s covered a significant amount of the automotive genres out there, and obviously needs something different and interesting from a journalistic standpoint.
One of the few he hasn’t covered is a classic American car, but that has been so overly covered in automotive journalism that it wouldn’t create anything really new.
I think his next car should be something incredibly unique, bordering on weird and quirky. A car people in the real world would see and be like, “What in the hell is that?!” Or a car that Jalopnik/Oppo type car geeks would see and be like, “OMG!! DEWWDD!!!” *snaps tons of pics with cellphone*
I’m talking something along the lines of a Citroen DS or Levi’s Edition Gremlin. Something just so weird, quirky, and niche that it could just as easily bring forth thoughts of either “that’s awesome!” or “what the hell was (insert manufacturer’s name here) thinking?!”
A short list of options:
-Citoren DS or 2CV
-Yugo
-Levi’s Edition Gremlin
-VW Bus (preferably camper style, because watching Doug live out of a camper while driving across country would be very entertaining)
-Isetta (Doug fitting into that would be very entertaining)
-Reliant Robin
Essentially, I wanna see Doug in the oddest car possible.

I’ll say it again. He should go pre-war.

lifted bro truck. he does like to sit in chairs during in his videos
![]() 12/02/2015 at 15:10 |

I think he should get something cheap and boring and pretend to love it while “accidentally” damaging it in all of his videos.
![]() 12/02/2015 at 15:11 |

Eh, I’ve had more than my fill of brotrucks after living in Arizona for 25 years. I don’t wanna read about them anymore. haha

I actually kind of thought of a stanced car. It would be funny.

Isn’t there usually more holding up the back of a car than just the shocks and springs? Something seems off there.
![]() 12/02/2015 at 15:13 |

I've suggested pre-war and/or side-car motorcycle every time. I stick with them.

he had a real ferrari, lets see if a fauxrrari gets more attention
fiero kit car... possibly one a little more convincing though
![]() 12/02/2015 at 15:14 |

And he could try and take it off road. I would love for him to do a stanced car.

A stanced brown Miata, just to watch Jalopnik burn... lol

I feel like you and I just talked about this! Oh wait, we did.
I’d love to see a micro-car, but I know it’ll never happen. It doesn’t have to be old, which is what’s throwing me off. What’s weird and not awful and in the ~$30k range?!
![]() 12/02/2015 at 15:16 |
|
It’s been answered before, by the Doug himself
![]() 12/02/2015 at 15:17 |

Yeah. I was trying to think of something that isn’t older than me too, but it’s difficult to come up with anything...

I do like this idea.

Toyota Previa that he gets to turn into the ultimate DD and track monster.
![]() 12/02/2015 at 15:20 |

Yes. So much this idea.
![]() 12/02/2015 at 15:21 |

I originally thought a race car of some kind, but Doug doesn’t seem like the track going type. So even though it’d be awesome, it won’t happen.
![]() 12/02/2015 at 15:22 |

I’d read the shit out of Doug-written Ariel Atom (or Caterham) columns.
![]() 12/02/2015 at 15:22 |

Yes and no. Cars (not trucks, trucks usually have rear leaf springs) with coils and a solid axle usually have a panhard rod to keep the axle from going sideways, but the springs and shocks are pretty direct, just like this. With a setup like this, travel is too far and the distance too long to use a panhard rod, so the support frame (which would normally be just suspension trailing arms) is cross-braced to stay square and keep the axle from going sideways just like a panhard rod would.
![]() 12/02/2015 at 15:23 |

I thought of a kit car/track toy too, but he just doesn’t strike me as the tracking type.
![]() 12/02/2015 at 15:23 |

Everything that’s new-ish and cool fits into the “exotic” or “cheap because it’s weird and sucked” category. No reason to get a Lotus, or an NSX, or any other “iconic” 90’s sports car - it’s the same tests for each of them that the Ferrari went through.
How about a Morgan three-wheeler? Oh wait, garage issues. Hmmm
![]() 12/02/2015 at 15:23 |
|
Yeah, none of the kit cars or track toys will really work.

yes... that does seem odd. but then again, engineering is often far from the mind of the average bro truck builder

Edmunds actually has a long term Yugo, and its about as terrible as you think it would be. Kinda funny.
I think an Isetta would be funny, but not for very long. Tough choices.

I’ll say it before and I’ll say it again, Gen 1 Viper.
Quite possibly the most insane and weird American sports car of the 90s.
![]() 12/02/2015 at 15:51 |

This actually came up in the conversation I was having with my buddy too. I really like the idea of the Viper.

How about an American Muscle car that the vast majority of people don’t know?
Plus a tiny aftermarket and ridiculously tiny parts availability for the updated Rambler Marlin...

I think I’ve found the perfect Doug-mobile.

I still feel like any muscle car is going to just fall into that same basket as every other article about muscle cars. Only muscle car guys will know that it’s a relatively unknown one, the rest of everyone will just see it as another muscle car. :/

OMG. Yes!!!
![]() 12/02/2015 at 15:58 |

I can live with that, and Doug probably would to, but it would be less controversial

Maybe one of those crazy modified Ruckuses with the extended swing arm and neon lights all over them...
![]() 12/02/2015 at 15:59 |

Perfect price, too. It leaves him a bit for anything that might crop up in the next year.

Well, since the REALLY scary TVRs aren’t 25 years old and legal to import yet, we’d have to go with the American version (that isn’t a Viper, too mainstream, too mass-market), a Panoz.
http://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/ca…
(And yes, this is literally the closest Panoz I could find to the Philidelphia area. Almost all of them are in Florida, except for a few, for some strange reason, might be because Panoz is based in Georgia, who knows.)
Second option would be a Rendezvous, because it’s an Aztek, but worse in every single imaginable way.

I like this idea. The most stripped F-150 he could find from about 2005-2010 would be perfect. It’d also expose him to the complete opposite end of the seller spectrum from that which he has experienced before.

Great idea, but it needs to be a Honda Odyssey from the unreliable transmission era just to add some entertainment.
![]() 12/02/2015 at 16:55 |

He should get with torch and get something out of Lane’s collection. They clearly have plenty of strange cars that are not on display.
