I wouldn’t because cars were niche items in 1902 and I’m just a poor mill worker.

I would have said Adams Farwell, but they werent’ really in proper production until 1905. Probably a Duryea or Peerless.

Imagine if we wrote about cars like people do horses.

“Pontiac was sired by General Motors but did not have the desirable traits of its siblings Cadillac and Chevrolet. The bloodlines of the family run deep as they can be traced to some of the most magnificent coach makers of Europe. But ultimately Pontiac had to be shot in the head because it simply wasn’t good enough to carry the GM bloodline.”

They weren’t impossible to get, just really pricey for what you got, with a long wait time and questionable support, etc. etc.. That got changed as much or more than the price when Ford, et al came on the scene.

A mechanic friend of the Wright Brothers bought one around 1901, and the jibe they and friends made wasn’t “wow you spent a life’s savings” it was “you need a sheet underneath it to catch falling bolts”. The two I listed, Duryea and Peerless, were close enough to mass production that people could start to afford them - the Duryeas were popular as a doctor’s car.

I was reading some alternate history/magic type book a while back, and there was something of that nature going on. Popular car makes as makers of magical conveyances/creatures that were alive.

Due to gasoline cars being a bit of a pain in the ass to operate in 1902, I’d go for a White steam car. A steam car of the day was much faster than any gasoline car anyways.

Ever notice how many appear in each London to Brighton run? They weren’t cheap enough for the working class, but they were cheap enough for the middle class and they sold thousands of them.

Actually I just noticed that on this one there is even a tiny oil lamp apparently just there to illuminate the sight glass. I can’t imagine driving something like this in the dark though.
