Here at Jalopnik, we like station wagons, as they make much more sense then any crossover/cuv/faux-suv can ever dream of making. The idea behind a station wagon is to provide as much usable cargo space as possible while keeping the excellent driving dynamics of the sedan they are based on.
Let’s have a look at the ten best wagons ever made.
10 - Dodge Magnum SRT8
One of the most surprising car of the last decade, a full size, rwd wagon with Chrysler’s signature HEMI engine. ‘Murica.
9 - Subaru Legacy GT wagon
A rally car for the family guy, unfortunately the legacy wagon morphed into a transgender wagon/not sure/suv, but the GT wagon is surely on the the most exciting wagon ever.
8 - Volkswagen Passat W8 Wagon
Where do we start, a W8 powered AWD luxury wagon available with a manual transmission, this is a close to Jalop God you’ll ever get
7 - Buick Roadmaster wagon
It’s basically the result of a threesome between a Corvette, a Grand Wagoneer and Cadillac Brougham. An American icon.
6 - Ford LTD Country Squire
It’s basically the result of a threesome between a Mustang, a Grand Wagoneer and Lincoln Town car. An American icon with SIDE FACING rear seats
5 - Volvo 740 Turbo Intercooler wagon
This checks a lot of boxes in terms of wagon awesomeness. RWD, Turbo, manual, rear facing seats and headlight wipers.
4 - SAAB TurboX Combi
A quirky Swedish wagon that could put a 911 Carrera4 to shame for half the price ? We need more of that.
3 - Cadillac CTS-V
A freedom-inducing American wagon that could put a Corvette to shame for the same price ? We need more of that.
2 - Mercedes-Benz 300TD
The glorious Diesel brown wagon in all its glory.
1 - Volvo 245T
Basically a station wagon version of one of the most iconic station wagon ever, the Volvo 245.

How did you manage to compile this list without an E63 Wagon?
![]() 10/26/2015 at 13:59 |
|
WHERE’S THE AVANTS
![]() 10/26/2015 at 13:59 |
|
SRT8/CTS-V
I think I’m covered
![]() 10/26/2015 at 14:00 |
|
They’re only good in their way-too-expensive RS variants.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 14:01 |
|
E63 trumps them all
![]() 10/26/2015 at 14:01 |
|
Ummm Nomad? or any other old wagons?
![]() 10/26/2015 at 14:02 |
|
His username is Margin of Error. Now you know the margin is at least the size of an E63 wagon.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 14:02 |
|
Not even close.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 14:02 |

>no BMW wagons
>no AMGs
>no Audis
>not enough Volvos
>no Ford Taurus
![]() 10/26/2015 at 14:03 |

Wagons are supposed to be humble and honest cars. The E63 is a bit over the top IMO. It fails at the core values of Wagonism.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 14:03 |
|
I find your lack of E61 M5 disturbing.
V10s make everything better.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 14:03 |
|
The last great American wagon. CTS-V is cool, but it can’t tow 7000 lbs or seat people in the back facing rearwards.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 14:04 |
|
Agreed Nomad should be #1 or #2.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 14:06 |
|
Incorrect, SRT8 is big old mercedes (not even a good one). CTS-V is just a big hatch.
Euro Wagons are love, Euro wagons are life.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 14:07 |
|
Fair enough. I has a sad though
![]() 10/26/2015 at 14:07 |
|
No 850?
No non VW VAG products?
No AMGs?
No Mondeos?
No BMWs?
Now I could assume this is an “available in America” list but you didn’t say, so therefore this lists sucks the sweatiest of balls.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 14:08 |
|
The E-wagons have a third seat and a hood ornament, which the SRT8 and CTS lack.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 14:08 |
|
Humble and honest.
Mercedes is over the top.
Puts the chrome/smoke nightmare CTS-V and the Magnum on the list.
(The E63 has backward facing seats AND is spacious, something neither the V or the Mag will ever hope to accomplish)
![]() 10/26/2015 at 14:09 |
|
850 is FWD, 740 is RWD so my choice is inherently better.
Mondeo LOL Y ?
![]() 10/26/2015 at 14:09 |
|
The E-AMG wagons are like the Magnum SRT8 but with a hood ornament and third seat. In fact, the Magnum SRT8’s rear end is straight off the W210 E55 and stamped made in Germany.
There’s also the 92-96 Camry wagon. The best car ever made, and it even has TWO rear wipers!
![]() 10/26/2015 at 14:11 |
|
Did you just say “two rear wipers” ?
![]() 10/26/2015 at 14:11 |
|
This should be called a stationary wagon, because I doubt many of these still move under their own power.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 14:11 |
|
Haha, nope.
Racecar > everything.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 14:11 |
|
Too expensive that’s why.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 14:12 |
|
Nice list! If it went to 15, I’d throw in the Jaaaaaag XF Estate, Mazda6 wagon, Ford Flex EcoBoost, and a couple more I can't think of.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 14:12 |
|
Magnum isn’t spacious? What? I DD one, and the thing is incredibly spacious. I don’t have rear facing seats, but whatever.
The E63 AMG is a monster though, I will absolutely concur it should be on the list, and I would knock off the 300TD in it’s place, because I would go for a different Benz wagon if I were to choose an older one.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 14:13 |

![]() 10/26/2015 at 14:14 |

That was as far from a production 850 than a CUP car to a production Fusion.

Yup :)

![]() 10/26/2015 at 14:23 |
|
Oh, I meant the combination of all the things, the E and the Mag are both spacious.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 14:23 |
|
Moms are overated anyway. Literally every one I know either has a crazy mom, or doesn’t have one. I mean look at you, you did alright.

False, Montego is always the answer:

Where are the two-door wagons?
![]() 10/26/2015 at 14:38 |
|
Hahahahahaha
There’s a newer generation one near me (early 70s) Montego Wagon.
It has the Cyclone hood scoop on it.
All kinds of badass.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 14:42 |
|
Two-door wagons are called shooting-brakes and deserve their own list.
A two-door wagon is as elusive as a four-door coupe.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 14:43 |
|
The Magnum could also be had with AWD and a Hemi. Awesomeness!
![]() 10/26/2015 at 14:44 |
|
Nomad is a shooting-brake, not a wagon.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 14:45 |
|
I think there’s a difference between a 2-door wagon and a shooting brake. A shooting brake is a coupe with an enlarged cargo area. A 2-door wagon is a wagon with only two doors. No way is a Nomad a shooting brake.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 14:49 |

Good point
![]() 10/26/2015 at 14:49 |
|
A rally cat for the family guy, unfortunately the legacy wagon morphed into a transgender wagon/not sure/suv...
The XV is based on the Impreza hatch, not the Impreza wagon...so wrong no matter how you write it. :P
![]() 10/26/2015 at 14:50 |
|
But the Legacy wagon became the outback, not the XV.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 14:51 |
|
Theres alo the RS6, (and arguably the RS7??) once equipped with a 5-valve lambo V10 in an AWD wagon. wat? but it does stray from what a wagon stands for - or, at least what a majority of jalops on this site value in wagons. the E63 AMG and the RS6 are insane, but does that necessarily make them the best? Is the best car a Veyron?
![]() 10/26/2015 at 14:52 |
|
Or RS4 or RS6?
![]() 10/26/2015 at 14:58 |
|
Oh yeah, I know. Ignore me. This is definitely one of those times where I can probably ignore the proper usage of the trans umbrella. :)
![]() 10/26/2015 at 15:05 |

Pardon me I always get confused with these terms, I think the term I wanted to use was crossdresser.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 15:07 |

It’s actually about AWESOME wagons
![]() 10/26/2015 at 15:08 |

FTW!! This is what I learned to drive with. We called it The Log Cabin.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 15:09 |
|
This depends greatly upon ones nationally......
![]() 10/26/2015 at 15:09 |
|
Muahahahahahahaha!! Okay, that made me laugh and I’m pretty sure you’d be correct about that. :)
I mean, it’s super hard to apply the gender spectrum to cars (because most cars would basically be trans lol) but for the sake of a harmless joke, I don’t see any problem.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 15:15 |
|
As this doesn’t state USDM only models, you’re missing one the best affordable performance estate cars out there!
![]() 10/26/2015 at 15:16 |
|
I don’t agree with your exclusion, but at least you have a reason and didn’t simply forget it. The Wagonair on the other hand...
![]() 10/26/2015 at 15:17 |
|
This is borderline Landaulet.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 15:19 |
|
That’s a rebadged Golf wagon/Jetta sportwagen ?
![]() 10/26/2015 at 15:20 |
|
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
FTFY.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 15:29 |

Hardly just a rebadged Golf, it shares the same MBQ platform as the Golf, as does the A3, Octavia, new European Passat, A4 etc but you don’t call them rebadged Golf’s. IMO the Leon is a much better looking car for much less pennies than the Golf.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 15:44 |

I need it
![]() 10/26/2015 at 15:50 |

The answer is always Mercury Montego

I think the Roadmaster wagon should be replace with the RS6 Avant OR the RS4 Avant.
I contribute the death of Wagons to the Roadmaster, and while I own wagons and love wagons in general, road masters can burn in the fiery depths of jalopy hell.
Even if the RS6/4 is to flashy, what about a Bel Air Wagon? Or an E63 Wagon? Or a more humble S4/6 Wagon (or the A4/5 Avant- we got options)? Literally any other wagon would be 10x better then the Roadmaster.
TL:DR I hate the Roadmaster with the burning passion of a Billion stars.

R63 AMG, the rarest AMG, is missing. Yes, it takes the first spot.

Magnum should be higher, but at least you put it on the list.
