And do you choose a plate design that matches your car better than another (color or theme)? I admit I do this.

Yep, we have over 100 in AL. The problem is they change them every few years (even the specialty ones) so it’s hard to plan ahead.

A perennially popular one here for gearheads is the Barber Motorsports/Museum one. You can almost guarantee this will be affixed to a cool or unique car:

We do but I stick with the boring standard one. I don’t even have the one for my alma mater on my car.

I used to have one of these with the tag number M-B-W.

Still the best...I don’t live in Texas anymore but I’d definitely get one of those just because it’s so absurd.

That’s cool! We have a couple that are motor sports related, and usually appear on some interesting cars.

Mine has a lovely gel badge. It doesn’t have an ‘E.U.’, ‘G.B.’, etc...

So I added an adhesive badge.

Not so much in MA. It’s all red letters on a white background.

Kinja'd!!!

There are a couple like this that have a slightly bluish background.

And then there’s this, if you’re feeling patriotic.

But that’s about it. Nothing funky or automotive related.

Kinja'd!!!

The one cool thing they do allow is to use a year of manufacture plate on antiques. In other words, if I had a 1966 Porsche 911, and I was able to track down a plate from 1966, I could go through a process to use this as my legal license plate instead of a new antique plate.

Wisconsin has a few different color or pattern plates.

I don’t run any of these, because they cost extra - $25 per year donation, and $15 issue fee on top of that.

The $25 per year donation goes to relevant things: Lambeau Field maintenance, motorcycle safety programs, Wisconsin Dept. of Veterans Affairs Veteran Home member care, and the Southeast Wisconsin Professional Baseball Park District (aka Miller Park), respectively.

That’s how my state is as well. $25 donation plus a $15 plate fee. I’ve stuck with the standard plate to avoid the fee, but might go with something different next time.

It’s just a shame we can’t get them with custom lettering. How many years has it been since that case was opened?

ILLINOIS has permanent 2-place letters on most specialty plates, so it fun to match colors, designs, and the two letter, and then your personalized alphanumerics.

Colorado has a ton as well. I have one on my truck, it’s sponsored by Trout Unlimited (I like to fly fish) cost me a one time $25 to TU and a one time $50 plate fee
