So...I’ve been working nonstop since 19 when I dropped out of college for the second time. I currently work for a kids education company and get paid rather well but the hours aren’t great until the spring/summer. I live in NJ too where rent even for a basic apartment is 800-1100 a month, add to that a car payment, insurance, gas, food, and phone bill. My big hang up is do I leave a job where I’m basically second from the top, love my bosses and co workers, and have been here for a couple years to pursue something more financially rewarding?

is there anyways to GET to the top?
if no, then this job has nothing more to offer. time to move up and move on.

I honestly don’t know. My boss has given me a lot more day to day responsibilities as she has wanted to take a step back, but this being the 2nd straight year I’m doing all this she has yet to really give me full control.

then either A: ask for a raise promotion, because your now doing more work then you signed up for, but with the same pay. OR tell her to do her job, and that you arent paid enough to do the work of 2 people.

I agree with Peter Black.
You need to go in and ask for a raise. Simply say, I’m going to have to start looking for something else because I need better pay. I love you guys and the job, I just need a higher salary to be able to stay.
I’ve done it before and it worked out quite well. My boss likes me though haha. He basically told me to go run the numbers on what I’d need then tell him and he’d make it happen. He did.

Remember when you switch you start back at the bottom, I left the software industry after 10 years for 5 years, I was burned out, after 5 years I determined my role in software is what I was good at and enjoyed, I went back now I’m back to where was 5 years before I left.

Money isn’t everything, especially if you hate going into the new job. To be fair though, I would chase the money, thats just me.

If I could do it all again even with a very good college degree and a job in that discipline....
welding, plumbing, some other good trade.
I have a friend/former co-worker who got tired of this industry about 7 years in and started taking “classes” and such for an apprenticeship as a welder. He worked part-time at it while working at our company until he got hired on permanently somewhere. He’s a ton happier.
It takes a skill and if that skill can be respected, you’ll have work. Whatever skill you have, find a way to work with it.
Don’t follow the Piper of money, or success, follow what you can invest yourself in, truly embody the work. That is where you will be happy and successful.
