Anyone know about late 90s GM VATS?

So my Olds Aurora VATS has been on the fritz recently, every once in awhile failing to start the car and displaying “Clean key, wait 3 mins”

The other day, however, it completely failed to start. It will turn to accessory power just fine but won’t try to start. It’s hard to explain, but before on a failed start it would leave the Security light on for the full 3 mins, whereas now it just seems to reset if you remove the key again, but it still won’t start no matter how much you try.

Sorry if the explanation isn’t adequate, it’s hard to put into words. But basically it won’t start at all now, no matter how many tries I give it. I figure some of you have to have dealt with this problem before, would wiring resistors to the ignition cylinder fix it or am I looking at replacing the Body Control Module?

Sounds like the BCM from what you are saying, that doesn’t sound like a key/sensor failure...

I could be (hopefully) wrong. Used to do alarms though in the early 2000s so I vaguely remember when I fucked up the vats modules and how it worked. I think there are like 20something VATS values, just go get a BCM from a junkyard, a pack of resistors, and go to town =p

I know the resistor value, I was planning on wiring them into the ignition before all this happened.

So how do I match the resistor value to the BCM? Or do I just pick one with the same resistance value?

No idea if you can find the value on the bcm. I was saying just get a random one, then try all 20whatever values until you find the right one

Wouldn’t I have to replace the ignition cylinder as well then? due to differing values? I’m confused....

This might help.

I don’t think so, the bcm checks the key value, I think the cylinder is just a reader/transmitter (but definitely google that first, don’t just trust me..)

*rolls eyes*

Really? Do you dislike GM or something? You've never been really clear on that.
