Man, I remember this segment. I miss the occasion of new episodes, and most of all, miss hearing Tom on my Saturdays in the garage.
But, a good friend in the public radio business always said their show was the most expensive the station had.

The very first episode of Car Talk I ever heard was the one in which the puzzler poetically made mention of a “dimly lit quonset hut”. Tom and Ray were busting a gut so hard it was infectious. I was instantly hooked.
The puzzler can be heard in the third half of this 2009 episode , shortly after the 35:53 mark. Must be a repeat, because I KNOW I heard them air this puzzler a good decade beforehand...

NPR charges their affiliates accordingly, and Car Talk usually had the biggest audience. That why the stations fundraise - they have to pay for that shit.

Oh yea. I mean, I know why it was expensive.
