I posted this picture as a part of M4 Monday, as I called it, and my friend today told me that he didn’t understand my post.

My friend: I didn’t get your post yesterday...is that a clock?

Me: Oh, that’s a stick shift from the BMW M4.

Him: What’s a stick shift?

Me: You haven’t heard of manual transmissions before?

Him: What’s that?

Me: It’s time for me to tell you a thing...

At least some of my non-gearhead friends have heard about stick shifts. But this is evidence that we must save the manuals, Oppo!

I was extremely surprised that it could possibly look like a clock. And besides, how would a clock with just 6 numbers in an H pattern work?

It’s simultaneously amazing and depressing that some people don’t realize manuals are a thing. I gave a coworker a ride home once who thoughy my car was broken because I kept having to move the ‘stick thing’ to change gear and her car does that for her.

My transmission is really cool. I pull up a handle that releases the brake, I have to shift this big stick on my steering column into “D” on my gauges, and I’m ready to go!

Sarcastic tone, I know, but like 90% of the stuff from drivers ed this summer, I forgot how to even start a car with a manual. I don’t even know which pedal is which.

There’s nobody I know in real life that doesn’t know what a manual transmission is.

I don’t even think any of the high school kids I mentor through FIRST would be ignorant to what a manual transmission is.

I’m actually surprised that he doesn’t know what a manual is. Everyone I know (14 and 15 year olds) knows what a manual is.

Exactly. I was shocked to hear that. He resists learning from my car talks though…I’ve talked to other non-gearheads about cars and they at least were interested.

I hate that so much. If I decide to talk to someone about cars (typically first cars) it’s great if they listen, or don’t go for the Jeep Wrangler or a Yukon/Escalade (yes I live in one of THOSE neighborhoods).

I actually have no idea whether or not my friends know what a stick shift is because I don't usually talk with them about cars. If I want to talk cars, I talk to my uncle, my dad, or go on Oppo.

Well, there’s some pretty Jalop stuff at my school. Besides the previously mentioned vehicles and 2500HDs on 6 inch lifts. There’s about 6 or 7 Jetta Sportwagens, 4 E36 BMW, a couple of old Volvos, and one Subaru Outback Turbo with a 5-speed.

Yeah, your friend is either a moron or brain dead. And your response to him was to ask why there would be an R on a clock is equally befuddling. The R is the most clock like feature of that stick. How about there being no hands, it not being round, or only having half the required numbers in a nonsensical order? You guys need to lay off the grass for a bit.
