Having spent many a mile behind the wheel of a 968, I have to say that I love all water-cooled, 4-cylinder, front-engined Porsches. They just kept getting better year after year until they were no more :(

They are very cheap, you know. I have a place that is hooking me up with one for $2,100. In perfect condition, but has been sitting still for years and years. Definitely does not have ADHD.

But in reliability things, the 944 is a king. The 928... well, I didn’t know V8’s could get that unreliable. I actually know a guy with a tri-turbo 928 with 900 horsepower. Chrome engine and all that good stuff.

Ah. Porsche is too confusing with all of that crap. 996 and 997, yes I know those, but the rest of the numbers are impossible to learn. Not talking about model names, like 911, 959, 928, 924, 944 all that. You get what I mean?

Heck yeah! The 924 was a pretty clean design, but the 944, with it’s aggressive fender flares, really gave it the muscular look that the shape needed.
Someday I’d like to find another 968 as I loved the engine in that thing. It was so smooth and torquey, and a nice step up from the 944. Combined with the 6-speed manual, the first one I’d ever experienced, it was just such a great powertrain. My only complaint would be that it still sounded like a 4-cylinder even though it had the smoothness of an I6.

I can actully say something here that adds to the conversation - I drove one of these that was nearly new in the late 80s. I liked the car, but not enough to buy one. Today, I’d spend the money on a Boxster, the best on I could find. Love its balance.

I can actually speak from experience - usually I’m just spitballing. Drove a 911 in the 90s (last year of the air-cooled, I recall), drove a 2000 or 2001ish Boxster, and drove a 944. Overall, the Boxster felt the most user-friendly and didn’t seem like it might try to kill me in a corner, like the 911.

Well, 968 was the name that was used on the badge and advertising and all - it’s not just the internal code name, but was just another standard model like 911, 924, 928 etc. It just happens to be relatively unknown. It was the final evolution of the 924/944 line - 3.0l 16V engine, 928-style headlamps, and a few other tweaks. Wonderful car, highly underrated. I miss it every day.

You are correct in that statement, but there seems to be a comprehension issue here. The 968, a standard Porsche model which was the one I drove, the one that was the final evolution of the series that started with the 924, did have these lights. My earlier comments expressed a love for all of the water-cooled, 4 cylinder, front-engined Porsches, particularly the one that I had - the 968. At no point did I ever state that the 944 had 928-style headlights.

Not a turbo, very competent, and if I’d been in the market for a Porsche I’d probably have sought out a used 928. The 944 was not bad, but of the most memorable driving experiences I’ve had, the Boxster is right up there. The 944 didn’t make we want it, for some reason. The 911 made me not want one - on a couple curves I could feel the rear end juuuust starting to step out. Never driven a 928, but I have been told they are very balanced.

It certainly looks like a good mix of vintage German machinery. He is missing one part on the Scirocco, namely the panel that attaches to the fuel filler. And the wheels - those appear to be stock 13” VW alloys, which I assume are on there for winter use. It needs 15” wheels at a minimum, something like these period-correct ATS Cups:

Because you’re not making yourself clear. Edit the poll question to read “What’s the most you’d spend for a factory fresh 944?”.
You say this in between polls but the eye is drawn to the polls themselves. The reader considers the text between polls to be surplus to the point of voting.
Leaving aside the fact that you will likely never find a factory fresh 944 outside of the Porsche museum in Germany, a very low mile and mint 944 would certainly command more than $2500. Would easily fetch close to $30,000 or a bit more if there’s a bidding war.
Most people say $2500 because most 944s you find are tired, old and will require lots of repair and maintenance. So the lower the price the better.

I like 944s but I think there are so many better cars from that period and for the money for an enthusiast. Like this is a car that will permanently be down on power unless you get a turbo or a S2. Some people like to claim “that doesn’t matter” but it does and there is no easy way to remedy it. Meanwhile I can get a car that handles just as good and can make enough horsepower to please someone long term in the 21st century. Like a FC RX7 Turbo, or a Silvia, or a Skyline, etc.
I WANTED to buy a 924S, basically the same car, but that came into my mind time and time again. Do I want to drive a car with 140hp? A S13 240SX has more and there is MUCH more support for upgrades on that car. If I want a car like it from the same period why not get an Alfa GTV 6? (i did at one point)
In the end a 944 is always a car I will respect because I like the design but never would buy unless I can get a Turbo or S2.
I would rather have a Miata than a 944 if I wanted to do anything but cruise in it. 944 is a good third car for me. But then even as a 3rd car, a cruiser or show car, i can think of better vehicles to buy that has better value there like the mentioned GTV6 to start.
