I can’t comment on the drivetrain since mine is different, but everything else about the E9X is great IMO. I think the driving experience is better that the new 3 series.

Downsides; You cannot get an E91 M3 V8 wagon.
Upside: You can build your own E92 M3 V8 wagon.

Only the N54/N55 eats the water pumps and fuel pumps. The N51/N52 doesnt have that problem.

Be prepared for awful mpg though. I am doing 15-16 MPG in my 128i :(

I got one about 3 months ago with 83k miles and I love it. It’s my roadtrip car and it’s perfect for that.

Good things

Quiet freeway cruiser

Looks pretty

Torquey engine because valvetronic (infinitely variable valve lift, vtec yo)

Handles pretty well

Logic 7 sound system is great

Bad

Mine has the sport suspension so i’m thrown towards the ceiling of the car pretty often.

Interior was smaller than I expected despite it being a wagon

No spare tire (run flats) Of course you can change that, but there’s still no room for a spare.

Can’t tell you about maintenance yet since i’ve only put maybe a 1000 miles on mine. I have mentally prepared myself for the waterpump failing and engine oil leaks.

My other cars so you know what my references are.

- Gen 2 prius (DD, very reliable car solid 50mpg over last 50k miles)

- AP1 S2000 (very focused car, serious)

- NA miata (very happy car, light hearted)

- A32 1995 maxima (beige car)

I would love to make a replica, but I would be restricted to visual because of money I don’t have.

Our 2011 (way back when) averaged 16.9-17.5 MPG. 20 on a good day.
